2015 Summer English Proficiency Requirement Appeal Instructions

You may submit an English proficiency appeal for Summer School course registration only if all of the following are true:
• The TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE Academic are not available in your location.
• You have not earned a four-year undergraduate degree with at least three years completed at a college or university located in
the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, or the UK, at which English is the sole language of instruction.
(Three-year undergraduate degrees from the UK will be considered upon appeal.)
• You have not completed a four-year high school education with at least three years completed at a school located in the US,
Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, or the UK, at which English is the sole language of instruction.

You may submit an appeal only if you are able to provide the following required documentation:
• Official scores from: Institutional TOEFL, the University of Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), the
Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), the Business English Certificate Higher (BEC Higher), or the Test of
English for International Communication (TOEIC, 800 or higher),
OR
• A transcript showing a minimum of one semester of graded study in courses other than English language skills at a university or
high school located in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, or the UK, at which English is the language of
instruction. A transcript from a school outside these countries, including American- or British-based schools, will not be considered.

Before submitting an appeal, please confirm your understanding of the English proficiency appeals policies:
1. Submitting an appeal does not guarantee approval.
2. The appeals process takes two weeks from the date that all materials are received.

3. Most appeals are approved for one semester only, so you will have to provide one of the minimum required test scores for future
enrollment.
4. If your appeal is approved you may still be withdrawn from courses if an instructor determines that your English proficiency is not
at the level that is required for his/her course.

5. Providing alternate proof of proficiency for course registration does not meet the English proficiency requirement for Harvard
Extension School degree program admission.

If your appeal meets these standards and you wish to submit alternate proof of English proficiency for registration in Summer
School 2015 courses, please do the following:
1. Register for the courses you plan to take this term. Your appeal will not be considered until you have registered. Your registration
or waitlist status will be conditional until a decision has been made on your appeal. If, and when, your appeal is not approved you
will be dropped from your courses for a full tuition refund.
2. Submit this form and all required documents after you register and no later than May 4 if you will request an I-20 certificate from
the Summer School, or May 18 if you will not request an I-20 certificate. Early submission is strongly advised as reviews may take
up to two weeks.
