Unit: Introduction
Lesson Duration: 180 minutes
Date: April.19th 2021

General  CTS 4: Demonstrate the appropriate management and treatment of injuries that
Outcome(s can occur during recreation activities and sporting events using simulations
)
 REC1020 1: Evaluate roles and responsibilities of a first aider in prevention of
injuries before an event or season of play

 HC1050 2: Explain the basic anatomy and functions of the muscular system

 HCS1050 3: Explain the basic anatomy and function of muscles and joint
structures

Specific  2.4 Define the terms origin and insertion

Outcome(s  3.1 Categorize joints in the body into the three categories of immoveable, partially
) moveable and freely moveable
 3.2 Describe the anatomical structure of joints and surrounding structures that
affect the function of a joint
 3.3 Describe the anatomy of synovial joints, comparing those with cartilage pads
and those without cartilage pads
 3.4 Categorize synovial joints into gliding, hinge, pivot condyloid, saddle, and ball
and socket joints
 3.5 Differentiate between stable and unstable joints in the body
 3.6 Summarize proprioception
 3.7 Identify three factors that affect the amount and direction of movement in a
joint
 3.8 Explain basic movement patterns, incorporating the concept of antagonist,
agonist and synergistic muscle actions involving the major joints
 3.9 Summarize active, resisted and passive range of motion

Learning Students will:

Intentions  Identify the various anatomical terms
 Describe the different types of joints and their role (i.e., hinge vs pivot vs synovial)
 Apply their knowledge of the terms and use them in a sentence

ials
What do I want my students to learn?
1. Anatomical Terminology (i.e. directional terms, movement terms,
injury classification, joints, etc.)

How will I know my lesson was successful?
1. Students are engaging and asking thought-provoking questions
2. Students complete the entry slip
3. Students are engaged during the bingo game

Introduction (5 mins):

 Go over the agenda

o Anatomical Terms PowerPoint

o Anatomical Terms Booklet
o Bingo Game
o Exit Ticket

“Happy Monday everyone. How was your weekend? If I can get your
attention up at the front, I will go over the agenda for today.”

“Are there any questions from the past lessons?” PowerPoint

“We are going to start with an anatomical terms PowerPoint. As I

mentioned work, this should be a review for most of you.”

Activity 1: Anatomical Terms PowerPoint (30 mins)

 I will go through an anatomical terms PowerPoint (this will be a
review as students would have already learned these terms in sports
medicine 10)
 I will play a short YouTube video that outlines the terms in a fun
manner (attention grabber)
 Throughout the presentation, I will ask students probing questions
such as,

o Use the term inferior in a sentence

o What joint in your body would be considered a hinge
joint? Anatomical
worksheet
o Use the term distal in a sentence
o Show me what adduction looks like
o Show me what dorsiflexion is
o Point to your dorsal surface on your hand

“The first activity that we will do is an anatomical terms booklet. This

will be a review from sports medicine 10. You can work in partners if
you wish. We will go over the answers once everyone has finished.”

Activity 2: Anatomical Terms Worksheet (30 mins)

o I will hand out anatomical term’s worksheet

o Students may work in partners and complete the assignment
o Once everyone is done, I will go over it to ensure everyone has the
correct information

“We are now going to play bingo. I will hand out a bingo card to
everyone and the goal is to get a blackout. On the PowerPoint slide, Bingo
there will be a definition and you will need to match that definition with PowerPoint
a term that is on your card. If the definition matches, color in that
Bingo Cards
square.”

“Are there any questions?”

Activity 3: Anatomical term bingo (30 mins)

 After we have gone through the PowerPoint, we will play an

anatomical term bingo game. This is a great review for students as
they have a terms quiz tomorrow.
 I will hand out bingo cards. Each bingo card is different
 The bingo cards have the definition of the anatomical terms on them
 I will go through the PowerPoint with the terms and if the term
matches one of the definitions on the student’s bingo card, they will
put an X or checkmark on that spot
 The student who gets a ‘black out’ (full card) yells bingo and wins
 This is a great way for students to practice and review their
anatomical terminology

“Great work everyone! The next thing I would like you to do is, on the
sticky note that is in front of you, I want you to use the term ‘superior’
and ‘deep’ in a sentence. When you are finished put the sticky note on
the white board.”

Conclusion (5 mins):

“Do you guys have any questions regarding anatomical terms?”

“Tomorrow you will have your anatomical terms quiz and we will move
on to reviewing taping (ankle and turf toe).”

 Explain that tomorrow we will be taping the ankle and turf toe
