Bollywood Ensemble
A resource pack for music leaders

To enable all young people to explore contemporary

A flexible resource for use with participants who present a
wide range of previous skills and experiences
Introduction
The idea for this package came initially from some students at Allerton Grange
School in Leeds, who wanted to perform something contemporary at the school’s
World Music concert. Many of them were talented musicians who were receiving
classical tuition on a number of South Asian instruments including tabla, dhol, sitar
and harmonium. Previously, they had combined contemporary CD tracks with dance
sequences or live music. However, they now wanted to be able to perform all of the
music themselves; music that they listened to and that they felt young people in
general would respond to.
This arrangement of “Kal Ho Naa Ho” from the film of the same name is in response
to their plea. Huge thanks must go to Ken Silver who arranged a short score from a
CD brought in by one of the students. I was then able to devise the ensemble and
classroom parts that are included in this pack.
I have used it myself in many contexts as follows:

1. As an ensemble performance piece


The first time we performed “Kal Ho Naa Ho” was at Allerton Grange’s ‘Music and
Munchies’ (we liked corny titles!) Concert. We chose it specifically because we knew
the audience would recognise it and we wanted to capture the spirit of this beautiful
song.
If you’re using it for a similar performance you’ll probably need to draw on some of
your more experienced musicians who can follow an instrumental part. We found it
very useful to ‘perform’ along with the CD in a ‘karaoke’-like fashion. This certainly
helped to get a feel of the song, and I would strongly recommend this approach. I
also provided the musicians with the CD to practice with which was invaluable in
getting the whole thing together.
If you decide to use the song as a classroom resource, then I would definitely
recommend that you buy the CD, it will really help.

2. As a workshop resource
The pack was adapted for use with Year 7 and Year 8 students (most of whom had
little or no musical expertise in the genre), at a taster workshop at Lawnswood High
School in Leeds. It would, I am sure, transfer well to a mixed ability class setting as
the instrumental parts, by their very nature, are differentiated. In addition, I have
included a variety of other resources that may be useful, which I have used in the
classroom.

Recommendations
There are many excellent resources for planning a scheme of work around South
Asian classical traditions but, as far as I am aware, very little which supports pupils
to perform music with a more contemporary feel; the music that they choose to
listen to themselves and that they relate to. This pack would work well in
conjunction with a scheme of work on classical Indian music, providing an
opportunity to discuss contemporary Indian music and introducing Bollywood styles to
your pupils.

Synopsis of the film


New York, April 2003. For Naina Catherine Kapur, life is cold, grey and dull – as it has
been ever since a family tragedy shook her world. Between the constant bickering in
her half Punjabi, half Catholic household, her grandmother's temper, looking after
her little sister and brother and helping her mother Jennifer deal with the family's
financial troubles, Naina has no time for parties, fun or herself. She is 23, going on
50. She is serious, she is boring.
Enter Aman Mathur. Like a breath of fresh air he moves into their tiny Indian
neighbourhood, helping others solve their problems and face life's little challenges –
Aman has all the answers. Much to Naina's irritation, he insists on interfering in her
life too…
Aman pushes Naina into doing things that she would never dream of. He nags her
until she learns to smile. He conspires with friend Rohit, an eligible Manhattan
bachelor, to help her find happiness. “Kal Ho Naa Ho” is the story of Aman, Rohit
and Naina's journey together - how they discover themselves, find the courage to
love and come together to celebrate life.
