N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Jennie Miller Date of Activity: 03/14/2021 Faculty name: Rajni Parmar

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with

(be specific about the purpose and your role):

The professional activity that I participated in was the COVID-19 Pulmonary, ARDS,

and Ventilator Resources free course. The course consisted of four modules that were designed

to help both nurses and nursing students further their understanding of ABG analysis, oxygen

delivery devices, ARDS and Respiratory Failure, and mechanical ventilation. My role as a

student learner was to follow the course and take an exam at the end of each module.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

This course was held online and delivered through the American Association of Critical

Care Nurses website. The program took me four hours to complete, each module taking about

one hour each. Additionally, the course could be completed at any time, as long as it was done

before the course due date for professional activities.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

This is a topic that I am very familiar with as we discussed it in great detail last semester.

Unfortunately, my preceptorship did not expose me entirely to arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis,

mechanical ventilation, and oxygen delivery devices due to the unit I was on. However, I am

interested in working in the critical care setting, so this content is extremely valuable. The best

way to become familiar with a topic is to continue working with it, which this course most

definitely helped with that. I hope to redo this course someday down the line in order to maintain

my knowledge on this topic.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

Staying on top of lab values, such as ABG’s, is a critical part of monitoring a patient’s

condition. If I were to work in a critical care setting this is something I’m going to have to stay to

monitor in order to best supervise the patient’s condition. Additionally, I may have to use an

oxygen delivery device to maintain oxygen saturation, so knowing what I can use or what is

available is extremely important to ensure quality care. Also, oxygen delivery devices don’t just

apply to pulmonary conditions, they are extremely applicable to cardiac and neuro issues as well;

consequently, it is in our best interest to stay up to date on this information regardless of how

much we need it on a day-to-day basis.

Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why

or why not? (Describe)

I would most definitely recommend this specific professional experience in the future,

especially because it doesn’t hurt to refresh your knowledge. Regardless of if you are working in

a high acuity setting or not, patient conditions can change in a matter of seconds so it’s really

important to know these things. Not to mention, this course is comprehensive, user friendly, and

fairly quick to finish so it would be good for anyone who needs something quick yet informative.
