What did you learn from the article?


I learned that we can still fight for country and embody nationalism, patriotism
and volunteerism using our literature as a medium without bloodshed. In
addition, his words became motivation of Filipinos to start regaining our
freedom from Spanish colonization. I learned that words are powerful enough to
raise awareness and influence others on how to fight for our rights which we are
currently practicing through social media.

How does the article relate to the lesson?


The lesson in this course is all about Rizal law and its significance to the
Philippine society. This article is all about how Jose Rizal helped in invention of
the national literature and how he uses it as a medium for his propaganda. Its
relevance to the lesson is the significance of Rizal law that we can study and
learn how Rizal believed that pen is mightier than the sword. Without blood war
against Spaniards, he was able to establish our national literature that shapes
Filipino culture.
How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?
This article promotes nationalism to me when it mentioned that Rizal, in 1880,
stood at the forefront where the perspective change from pre-nationalism into
true nationalism, forging path to a “national” literature. His struggles, sacrifices,
and ideas to use his writings to fight against Spaniards is itself nationalism. It
shows that our national literature is our pride because its our own language that
shapes us who we are.
How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?
The article promotes patriotism to me when it mentioned that Rizal tried many
things that would incorporate and highlight the Filipino culture. From
researching and writing his own version of national history to composing and
creating a lexicon of all known dialects in the country. His passion during his
time for the invention of national literature embodies the patriotism which is his
love and devotion for his country and its literature.

How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?


The article promotes volunteerism to me when Rizal tried his best to implement
and create our national literature. This shows that Rizal volunteered raising an
awareness that our local languages starting from T’boli up to the well-known
ones such as Tagalog and Cebuano are cultural resources for our national unity.
This volunteerism shaped the Filipino culture.

Through this article, I learned that not all Catholics have the same belief or
perspective about Rizal that his works are targeting church and Catholics’ faith. I
also learned that some Catholics can be very influential and powerful that it can
manipulate another person just to protect its religion and strengthen the
Catholics’ faith.

How does the article relate to the lesson?


The lesson in this course is all about Rizal law and its significance to the
Philippine society. This article is all about the several drafts of pastoral letter
written by Horacio de la Costa for bishops in 1952. Its relevance to the lesson is
all about the view of other Catholics specifically, Fr. Horacio de la Costa about
Rizal bill which has an aim to educate youth about Rizal’s life and works.

How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?


This article promotes nationalism wherein it was mentioned that Rizal’s works
does not constitutes a danger to the faith and morals of a mature and well-
instructed Catholic rather, this will serve to develop a wise and generous love of
their native land which is the Philippines. This shows how Rizal loves his
country wherein his writings has a goal to develop in our youth a sane and
constructive nationalism for the common good of the Filipinos.
How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?
This reading promotes patriotism on the Draft A no. 4 wherein it mentioned that
“Rizal’s love for his country did not blame all ills on strangers but proclaimed
that Filipino people were also victims of their own vices and defects.” This
shows patriotism that Rizal loves his country and his fellow Filipino, but he is
still open for improvement and does not blame Filipino for their ignorance since
we are also victims.

How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?


This article promotes volunteerism when it shows how Rizal did not attack
Catholic church itself, but the abuses in it. Through his writings about fictional
crimes of fictional characters, which has a basis in fact, he was able to raise
awareness that this was our country and religion back then. This act of
volunteerism that Rizal possessed brings us the motivation to always fight for
our rights and freedom.
