5E Lesson Plan

4th Grade
Writing

7) Writing. Students write about their own experiences. Students are expected to
write about important personal experiences.

Lesson Statements:

The student will be able to write hooks for their narrative essay.

The student will be able to write about their own experiences.

Essential Question:

How can I write about my important personal experiences?


Supplies

● Markers/Crayons
● White Paper
● Projector
● Seesaw
● White Board
Pre Assessment
Have students write down 5 moments or events from their life that could be
potential topics for an essay.

Then pick 3 of those ideas and come up with 1 hook for each of them.

Ask students to share their ideas with the class.

Lastly, have students pick one event to write a story about.

SPED- Come up with 3 ideas and write a hook for only one of them.
Engage- 15 min
Put the comic strip on the projector and have
students write a short story about it (one paragraph).
VISUAL

Submit a picture of the story on Seesaw.


Explore- 20 min
Write on the board:
Main character: Principal Jones (for example)
Setting:
Problem:
Now ask the students where Principal Jones is. East Avenue Elementary School (for
example)
Now tell the students that he is dealing with a problem and have students come up with
what it is. A goat has snuck onto campus and is hiding in the boys bathroom, principal
jones has to figure out how to get it out. (for example)
Have the students Kagan Strategy/Round Robin what principal Jones does to take care
of the situation and write the student’s ideas on the board.
Explain- 20 minutes
Students will use Kagan Strategy/Timed Pair Share and randomly walk around the
classroom until the teacher tells them to stop.

Once cued, students will find a partner by touching elbows, and then students will
read their stories to each other.

Students will take turns telling their partner how they could revise and edit their
narrative essay.

This process will be repeated 3 times.

KINESTHETIC
Elaborate- 45 min
Have students make colorful covers for their stories.

Put cover on the projector while students’ read their essays to the class.
LINGUISTIC
Evaluate- 60 min
Once students have written their first draft, as well as revises based on
suggestions and comments from their peers, students will meet with the teacher.

Some questions to ask during a revision conference:

What other words can we use to describe __? Where in the story can the reader
see some character traits of __? What descriptions of your setting create a mood
in the story?
Exit Ticket
Write down what 3 of your classmates’ personal narratives were about.
Homework
Draw or take a picture of you doing something at your house that you could write a
story about.

Submit the picture on Seesaw.
