What makes better

artworks? CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTIST
Artists can be inspired by many factors. Their work is dictated by the
combination of these elements that most of the time, even if the subject is the
ssame, the output varies from one another.

Overview:
In the contemporary times, more and more artist is trying to find new and
innovative ways to express themselves. Many contemporary Filipino artists turn to
their cultural heritage and indigenous materials for inspiration. The results are
often exciting and surprising. These artworks are certainly avant-garde and yet
rooted in Filipino culture.
The following lessons tackles the different contemporary from the different
areas of the Philippines and their body of work that is inspired by their heritage.
The first lesson in this unit deals with a selection of visual artists from Luzon,
Visayas, and Mindanao.
One of the strongest factors that influence the work of the artists is that
environment. The way they were raised and the experiences they had with the
society they grew up in would be a rich source of subjects and inspiration they
could draw their work from. There are some artist who not only use their
environment as inspiration but also their culture and heritage. These artists use
familiar materials and media and connects to them and their country. Their works
result in arts that both a representation of them and of their country. In this lesson
will showcase contemporary Filipino artists from the different parts if the
archiepelago that have shown innovation in their crafts, resulting in arts that
promote and enhance Philippine contemporary arts. It must be noted that like all
things, artist styles will change. What may be their inspiration now may not be the
same one in a few years. The content of their inspiration now may not be the same
one in a few years. The content of their arts goes through changes and many will
experiment as thet progress in the development of their arts.

ARTIST IN LUZON
RODEL TAPAYA
Hails fromBulacan. He is a multi-
awarded Filipino artist winning art
contests here and abroad. He got
his break when he won the top
prize in the Nokia Art Award,
dominating other artists from the
Asia-Pacific region. He was given
the opportunity to study and train
in New York and Finland, and
eventuallt graduated at the
University of the Philippines
College of Fine Arts.
Tapayan uses traditional medium,
his paintings are not. He
innovatively used subjects unspired
by the culture and history of the
Philippines. He also uses folk subjects
and myths from Filipino folktales, nad
Bernardo Carpio, to add symbolic
meaning and relevance to his views.
These mythical elements were used as a
commentary on the ills of the society
today. This direction of his work was forst
seen in his solo exhibit entitled rodel
tapayan: Folkgotten (2008).
DEXTER SY
Was born in manila in 1979. He
uses mix heritage of being a Filipino-
Chinese as his inspiration for many of his
works. These offer personal insights and

commentary in the life of Filipino-chinese. The result were artwork that were
personal, self-deprecating, and honest. His works study the differences and clash
that arise from having a diverse and sometimes contradicting cultural heritage.
Sy’s Filipino-Chinese heritage comes naturally for him as he has long
identified himself with his roots and history. Sy’s mixed heritage can be seen in his
use of Chinese folk arts and symbols, and elements borrowed from traditional
Chinese paintings and costumers. Filipino cultural influence is evident with Sy’s use
of Catholic images, indigenous Filipino motifs and ubiquitous Filipino products.
RONALD RIEL JARAMILLO HILARIO
He was born in San Vicente, Ilocos Sur in 1976. Hilario belonged to a family
who is famous in creating wood-carved santos and firnitures. He learned rebulti-
carving from his uncle Jose Lazo Jr., a local wood-carver. Using his family’s wood
crafting heritage as an inpiration for his artworks, he was able to distinguish himself
from his contemporaries. He describes himself as a contemporary artist that uses
traditional wood-carving techniques. His sculptural works give the unmistakable
feel og the wood-carved religious iconography of catholicism. It is a tyrait that can
be seen in almost all of his figurative sculptures. He believes that these sculptures
should not just be artifacts of our past but as expressions of our world-views.
CLIFFORD ESPINOSA
He is a Filipino architect, artists and environmentalist. He believes that
functional thing can be at the sametime beautiful as seen in his furniture. His
interest in art was already apparent since he was a child, spending his spare time
drawing and skething.
Clifford gets inspiration from indigenous forms of craft. He applies the techniques
he learned from these traditional crafts on his own work, such as assembling and
creating furnitures wothout the use of nails. He measures and cuts each piece of
wood perfectly so that each place falls secureli into place. He believes that by
replicating these indigenous techniques he also preserves and honors our heritage.
JOHN PAUL ANTIDO
Antido was born in Antipolo in 1982. He is a Filipino contemporary painter
whose works are characterized by his use of impasyo techniques-bright vivid
colors. His Filipino heritage can be seen in his figurative subjects where people are

in contemporary settings, but are depicted wearing traditional Filipino costumes
such a Baro’t saya, bakya, etc.
RICKY AMBAGAN
Looks to the present Filipino daily grind for inspiration in his collection of
paintings entitled Mga Langgam sa Syudad. His collection of fifteen paintins on
burlap depicts the chaotic and crowded streets of Manila. One of his paintings
replicates a captured candid moment in the midst of traits using distotion as a style.
He compare the city dwellers of arts that are overly preoccupied with their own
business.
AZE ONG
Aze Ong was born in year 1977, she is known for her colorful and oraganic
forms made in crocheted theads. She grew un in Antipolo City. As there were no
ethnic groups in her community, she always felt that she was constantly looking for
her identify as she grew up. That is until she volunteered as a teacher in Kibangay,
Lantapan Bukidnon for a year in 1999 for the Associated Missionaries of the
Assumption (AMA). During her stay, she developed her style and art. She shares
that the creative process involved in her creation of her crocheted masterpieces
are parallel with the Talaandings. Her masterpiece are parallel with the nature. She
says that inspirations are from within and nature. She says that sher often invioke
the “spirit” to guide her craft.
ALMA QUINTO
Alma “Urduja” Quinto was born in 1961 in Urdaneta, Pangasinan. She is an
artist, teacher and cultural worker that uses her talent and art to help communities
that hace been affected bu natural and human-made calamities. She believes that
art has a social responsibilty to the community and that art can be used as a tool
for healing and collaboration.
ARTIST IN VISAYAS
PETER JAMES FANTINALGO AND MOREEN AUSTRIA
Visayan artist Fantinalgoa and Autria collaborated together in 2018 to
create a collection entitled Lawig that celebrate the unique relationship between

Hiligaynon, which is quite apt given the island’s history. These two provinces have

what they know about their region historically and sociologically.
NUNELUCIO ALVARADO
Since tha 1970’s, Alvarado has been a prominent name in the art scene in
the Philippines and in Southeast Asia. He is currently based in Bacolod, Proud of his
Heritage, he often uses his work to create awareness of the Sakadas of Negros and
the other marginalized people of the society. His many paintings are often rooted
on the problems his home province faces, namely , injustice, and poverty.
MANUEL PAÑARES
He is a Cebuano painter who known by his historical themed paintings. He
believes in the power of the art as a medium of learning. He creates realistic
paintings of Cebu and Mindanao’s historical events as a wayfor his fellow
Cebuano’s to learn more about their history.
He has long favored to paint subjects that dealt with etmology and histiry.
His paintings exude expression and life and, at the same time, become tableaus of
historical events.
MARTINO ABELLENA
Martino Abellena, a.k.a “Not Tinong” was an important personalty in the
development of art in Cebu and the rest of the Visays. He is acknowledged as the
“Deam pf Cebuano Painters.” His exposure to the arts started at an early age since
he came from a family of artists.
He was an in demand muralist and portaiture artist. He is also known for
his seascapes depicting the beautiful shores and beaches of Cebu. He later became
the head of the Fine Art Department of the University of the Philippines, Cebu. He
served as a great inspiration and influence to generations of Visayan artist, one that
can still be seen decades after his death in 1988.

MARIANO AMAR CATAGUE
“Any” was born in 1967, he was a Davao artist who depicts the Lumands in

Saudi Ahmad, based in Su=ibugay, Zamboanga, is said to be one of the

Muslims. His subjects are often genre paintings of community life, with his figures

He was originally from Iligan City, but now based in Vancouver, Canada.
Even if he is abroad, he admits that the works that he does are heavily influenced
by his indigenous roots. His workds are known all over the world for his use of color,
human figures, symbols, and motifs that cannot deny his Filipino heritage. He
believes that though it is good to study foreign works, one should noy be fully

Overview:
In the field of visual arts there are different facets or aspects of production
in creating an artwork. It does not simply begin and end with the creation of art it
is not as simple as making a drawing or a painting, you display it and you are done.
It is more complex than that. Every artwork is a product of the various different
details that you often overlook. But if you take the time you would realize that
these small details have actually continued in the creation of the artwork and
added another layer to its value.
The visual arts are art forms such as painting, drawing, printmaking,
sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, crafts, and
architecture. Many artistic disciplines such as performing arts, conceptual art, and
textile arts also involve aspects of visual arts as well as arts of other types.
AWARDS
Given to the artist to recognize a single
achievement or the career as a whole. Most often,
awards that are given for a single achievement ois
won through competitions and contests. Some of the
most popular visual arts competition in the
Philippines include the Shell National Students Arts
Competition, THE PLDT-DPC Visual Arts Competition,

the GSIS Art Competition.

Many contemporary Filipino artists started their careers by joining and
winning awards from competition. Examples are the BenCab who placed 1962 in
the Shell National Students Art Competition and Ronald Ventura in 1990 for the
same competition, Antonio Leano in 1981 for MADE. Some awards are given to
artists to acknowledge their talent or their cotributions to their craft. Some of the
most prestigious and respected of these awards are the TOYM, Gawad CCP Para sa
Sining, Thirteen Artists Award, the Ateneo Art Award, and the highest of which are
the Order of the National Artist Award and the GAMABA.
ART CRITICISM AND SCHOLARSHIP
Criticisma and scholarship are two of the moset related aspects in the
production of art, where visual or performing. Art criticism is the evaluation of an
artwork based on its aritistic merits, its historical and cultural importance. Art
scholarship on the other hand, is the orderly organization and study of art, whether
it is the actual artwork itself, the artists, or its art form. Art scholarship includes the
documentation and authentication of artworks. It also includes the study of the
historical and theoretical developments of art in relation to social, cultural and
historical considerations.
Many art scholars are art critics since art crticism is a discipline involved in
art scholarship.
ART EDUCATION
Art education is the transfer of knowledge, skills, and art appreciation from
a teacher to student. Education can be done in both formanl and infirmal settings.
Formal education pertains to teaching done in a specific venue such as a school,
while informal education pertains to more relaxed environment such as a master-
apprentice relationship found in many ethnich grops, where knowledge and skills
are transferred through apprenticeship.
Another venue of art education are workshops. Often managed by art
organization, art workshop are often short course that focuses on a particular skill.
These workshops are often held during summer breaks or weekend since often
times participants of these workshops are students. There are workshops that

cater to adults and these are often schedule during the weekends or after work
hours to new discovers and technological developments.
MEDIA
Is the visual art componant that pertains to the materials the artists uses
for his artwork. There are many different types of media an artist can use at his/her
diposal and these only increase with time due to new discoveries and technological
development. Each medium entails different manipulative process for an artists to
achieve their desired outcome.
The most common and traditional examples of media used by
contemporary artists are clay, wood, metal, stone, fiber, dyes, paint, ink, pencil,
paper, glass, plastic, and film. The newer media types are computer technology,
light, geetic, trash, etc. it can be used alone or in combination with two or more
mediums. Used in combination, it would fall into the category mixed media.
There is really no limit on the type of kind of medium a contemporary visual
artists could use. The boundary is all left to his/her imagination.
ORGANIZATION
Organization are formed when people of common goal band together for
a cause or goal, this is true for many art oraganizations. Many artists work together
to establish unity and camaraderie between fellow artists. They also form
orgnanizations to protect each other’s right and voice out concerns that effect
them as visual artists. There are many art organizations in the Philippines, some
are international offshoot organizations while other are nationwide organizations
and many are regional art organizations.
The Asian Cultural Council (ACC) is an international art organization that
began in 1963 whose vision is to provide a support system between the art and
cultural exchanges between the United States and Asia through visual and
performing art projects. It has a counterpart in Manula called the Asian Cultural
Council Philippines Foundation (ACCPF) which was created in 2000. Like its fpreign
counterpart, its goal is to increase opportunities for Filipino artists, academics, and
cultural organizations through the promotion of Filipino heritage.
One of the most repected visual art organizations in the Philippines is the
Art Association of the Philippines (AAP). It started as an alimni association

protect the artist works from copyright infringements.
PRSP – Performing Rights Society of the Philippines is a collection of other
performing organizations such as Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-Aawit (OPM);
Philippine Legitimate Stage Artists Group (PHILSTAGE), which is an organization for

theater, dance, and music companies; and Asosasyon ng Musikong Pilipino (AMP),
which organizes the works of the performing artists used in commercial broadcast
or other communications to the public.
EDUCATION
Education in the
performing arts is concerned with
the transfer of knowledge, the
techniques and styles. As with the
visual arts, it can be transferred
through informal settings or
formal backdrops such as the
classroom. This aspect of
production is one of the most
significant since it deals with the
continuing survival and promulgation of the art, through the transfer of the
knowledge, skills, and technique to the next generation.
Informal education is often the type of education seen in the ethnic
groups. Music and the other performing arts are taught to the youth trhough oral
transmission and demonstation. Books and other materials are not needed since
the different songs, dance and rituals are ingrained in their everyday lives. The
students learn their community’s performing art organically. They learn the art
through constant exposure, application and practice.
In the formal education, performing arts are included in the curriculum of
the students. The performing arts are learned through teacher-led instruction in
the classroom. Teaching standards are set per grade level. The students learne art
appreciation, art history, and learn and apply different styles and techniques.

MUSIC INDUSTRY
Is the business of selling recorded music. This is collaborative work that
entails different personalities such as the producer, the singer or sometimes called
the recording artist, the composer, the arranger, the recording company,

managers, musicians, technicians, record duplicators, disc jockeys, and the sales
team. Sometimes multiple roles can be engaged in by a single person.
The influence of the music industry to the development of today’s Filipino
music is undeniable. Music is a popular form of entertainment and has been a very
lucrative business. Many recording companies can influence fads and trends
through the use of various marketing starategies. Recording companies can choose
which recording artist would be given exposure, often taking into consideration the
marketability of the artists and the song rather than its artistic merits. They can
sway the tastes nad preferences of the people to the type of music they listen to
recording artist through various methods such as increase of radio or televesion
play, integration with a television series as a soundtrack, creation of music videos
that are uploaded to a video sharing sites such as Youtube and the like.
The biggest problem the music industry faces is music piracy. With the ease
of creating copies of music, many people get their music from pireted or illegal
sources that result in a big loss of income to the recording companies. Income to

DANCE
CHOREOGRAPHY

cultural ethnic groups. Indigenous groups have traditionally invented and taught
dance as a community, passing the forms and movements from one generation to
another. though many of the indigenous dances appear to be improvisational some
are expected to follow a set of movements and wear approriate costumes and
props. Examples of these ritual dances are the Tingulan’s gabbok, which is a dance
to pray for a child’s well-being and the Tabanua’s pagdidiwata, which is a dance to
implore the spirits for an abudant harvest.

DESIGN
Dance are the visual materials used to suggest, allude, symbolisms and
illustrations. These materials include sets, props, costumes, and lighting. Sets are
backgrounds that are sometimes constructed or painted. The props and costumes
help identify characters and events and enhance the movements on stage. Lighting
provides appropriate mood or a sense of time.
THEATER
ACTING AND DIRECTING
Acting is the art embodying a character. It is one of the most basic elemts
in theater. Acting in indigenous theater is seen in rituals and dances. Indigenous
theater acting can be seen in their representation and mimicry of animals and
dances. In the contemporary stage, acting has been heavily influenced by Western
styles of acting such as the Stanslavsky method which is described as understanding
the true quality of each emotion through one’s observation. Another acting style is
Stransberg’s method acting, which is describe as being the character in and outside
the stage, as well as the Brenchtian school of acting, which portrayed the
characters in a critical manner rather than in its emotional state.
Directing is the complete supervision and management of all the different
elements in theater production. This includes the approval and coordination with
all the aspects of a production such as acting, design of the sets, costumes, lighting,
and sound. The person responsible for the final artistic outcome of the theater
production is called the director. The director is the one who interprets the
dramatic text for the viewers. From the director’s interpretation or directorial
vision will all the other concepts of the production branch out.
SCRIPT
Script or the play script is the literal transcription of the play. It includes
stage directions, production notes, and cast list. The person who writes scripts for
plays are called playwrights. A playwright’s work can go several modifications and
revisions as the production of the play progress. These modifications and revisions

setting, period, and time. Depending on the interpretation of the play, sets can ebe
very minimal or it can be very elaborate.
Costumes as a theatrical production aspect deals with the distinct attire a
character wears during the performance. The style and design of the costume is a
visual aid to the setting and environment the play is staged in, as well as offering
insights to the characters traits.
Lighting is the use of light in a theater production. Similar with that
mentioned in the aspect of dance, it is used to illuminate the stage, create
ambiance and mood, and highlight and exaggerate a character’s movement. Stage
lighting can be achieved through the use of footlights, spotlights, overhead
illuminations, etc.
TRANSLATION AND ADAPTION
