CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

I. INTRODUCTION

Philippine education used to be behind when compared

against larger, and more advanced countries. But in a

historic moment for advocates of educational equity, President

Benigno Aquino III approved Republic Act (RA) 10533, signing into

law the K-12 program on May 15, 2013 to improve the quality of

education in the Philippines. Comes with it, the new higher-grade

level that includes several strands for the student to take; Grade

11 and 12 levels being considered as the new “Senior High School”.

One of the requirements of the Grade 12 level requires work

immersion experience in which the student is sent to work for

several weeks in an industry related into the strand they picked.

In the early years of the new system specifically up to the

year of 2019, everything worked out fine and the students were

able to easily gather the required papers and requirements to be

sent into the industry in which they’re going to be sent at.

But in the year 2020-2021, a pandemic has hit multiple

countries including the Philippines and has massively affected

the ways of living and the method of education.

There were immediate demands that need to be fulfilled

among the academic requirements, blended learning and social

adjustments of Grade 12 Information and Communication Technology

Students during the Academic year 2020- 2021. There were mostly

online classes and lesser time for practical demonstrations among

Grade 12 ICT students.

This study will explore the impact of the pandemic to the

work immersion experience of the Grade 12 Information and

Communication Technology Students of St. Augustine Foundation

Colleges at PC Henz Computer Trading where the students are

tasked to assist with actual work procedures while being made

sure that they followed the COVID-19 protocols where social

distancing was advised as well as the proper usage of face masks

and face shields.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

I. FOREIGN STUDIES

Based on the study "Guidance for Businesses and

Employers Responding to Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID- 19)"

(2020) published by the "Center for Disease Control and

Prevention.”Businesses and employers can play a key role in

preventing and slowing the spread of SARS-CoV2 within the

workplace. Employers’ COVID-19 preparedness, response, and

control plans should take into account workplace factors such as

feasibility of social distancing in the workplace, ability to

stagger employee shifts, degree to which employees interact with

Nueva Ecija

the public in person, feasibility of accomplishing work by

telework, geographical isolation of the workplace, proportion of

employees at increased risk for severe illness, policies

regarding sick leave for staff, and priority for continuity of

operations. Employers should also consider the level of COVID-19

disease transmission in their communities.

Based on a Deloitte study by O. Boichenko and N. Tymchenko

(2020) titled "How to reduce the pandemic impact on employees: A

guide for business leaders," despite all the risks and stress, it

is important to remember that we have faced crises situations

like this in the past. First of all, it is a challenge for the

company's culture and management practices. If you believe

that people are the most valuable asset to your business, then

you have to communicate, plan, and be consistent. Show up for

your employees and support them. At the end of the day, we are

all human, and every one of us may be impacted by COVID-19. Now

is the time for company leaders to lead for the safety and

welfare of their people.

Centered on the study "EMPLOYER BEST PRACTICES: Policies

to Support Workers During the Corona Virus Pandemic" by the

National Partnership Organization Companies(2020) can ensure a

healthy working environment for their employees by which the

physical distance between employees and customers to six feet.

Hand sanitizers should be available throughout the workplace, as

well as the option to wash hands regularly. Maintain good

housekeeping (and ensure the cleaning staff is protected), and so

on.

II. FOREIGN LITERATURE

Based on William Fry's (2021) article "Important COVID-19

Update: Government Releases Protocol for a Secure Return to Work"

on the Lexelogy website, the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to

present a challenge to all workplaces as they begin to reopen. To

ensure they are ready to reopen safely when the time comes,

employers should take this opportunity to read the Protocol and

examine their policies and procedures to ensure compliance with

the Protocol and best practice.

Based on M. Beauregard and T. Rodriguez's (2020) article

"Back to Work: A Template for Safety Procedures and Protocols" on

the EHS Today website, COVID-19 has imposed a ‘new normal’ for

manufacturers around the world that will likely become a

St. Augustine Foundation Colleges
of Nueva Ecija, Inc.
Hermogenes Bldg. Bonifacio St. San Jose City
Nueva Ecija

‘permanent normal’ for how we think and act to contain this

crisis – and future pandemics. Besides figuring out better supply

chain solutions, those who re-open their operations must expand

upon existing safety protocols, rapidly deploying plans to

protect their people and facilities – all while remaining in

compliance with federal, state and local guidelines.

Based on the article "What is the Federal Government Doing

in Response to COVID-19?" (2020) from USA Gov. Each state manages

its own response to the corona virus pandemic, according to the

following protocols. Physical distancing, wearing a mask, and

other rules are some of the rules.

III. LOCAL STUDIES

According to the CSC-DOH-DOLE Joint Memorandum Circular

No. 1, s. (2020) during this time of pandemic workplace standards

must comply with include installation of adequate fire,

emergency, or danger signs, facilities for persons with

disabilities, and health clinic or treatment room; regular

practice of good housekeeping such as eradication of stagnant

water and proper waste disposal; OSH Standard-compliant building

construction and maintenance, space requirement, walkway surface,

floor and wall openings, among others; provision of OSH Standard-

compliant personal protective equipment (PPE) and devices;

proper handling, use, and storage of hazardous materials; and

implementation of an indoor air quality management program.

During this time of pandemic, according to R. Punongbayan,

MD, MBA, FPCP's study "PCOM COVID-19 Interim Guidelines"

conducted on the PHILIPPINE COLLEGE OF OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE,

INC. Using the hierarchy of control to determine the

appropriate strategy for minimizing, if not removing,

occupational risks, increase ventilation or add air filters,

negative pressure ventilation if necessary, and install physical

barriers, such as transparent plastic sneeze guards, where

possible. The aim of ventilation should be to transfer the

source of possible pollution to air-exhaust points or areas

where adequate dilution can be achieved.

According to B. McKenzie's (2021) study "Supplemental

Guidelines on Workplace Prevention and Control of COVID19|

Philippines," it is mandatory to wear face masks, maintain

physical distance, and clean regularly during this pandemic. All

workers in the workplace are also expected to use face shields.

Face covers, in conjunction with face shields, can protect the whole

face. Face shields should cover the entire face and should

always be worn while communicating with others, along with face

masks. Face shields can be withdrawn depending on the demands of the

job or where the workers' workplace safety and health requires it.

IV. LOCAL LITERATURE

According to an article published on the Department of

Labor and Employment's official website (2020) titled "Workplace

guidelines set to cut spread of COVID-19”.During this pandemic,

there are health precautions that should be followed at all

times, including physical distancing, proper respiratory

etiquette, and disinfection protocols. Eating in communal

areas is often prohibited, and where this is not practicable, the

employer shall maintain a one worker per table and one-meter

distance per worker scheme.

According to the Department of Health's "Workplace

Handbook," (2020) there are ten things that must be done in

the workplace for COVID management and prevention, some of it is

always practice personal protective, strictly follow and

implement guidelines on infection control procedures, measures,

St. Augustine Foundation Colleges
of Nueva Ecija, Inc.

Nueva Ecija

strictly adhere to guidelines on the implementation of community

quarantine, etc.

Based on the article "Work immersion for SHS not suspended

–DepEd" in the Manila Bulletin (2020), Department of Education

states the students are able to gain relevant and practical

industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts and

workers; enhance their technical knowledge and skills; enrich

their skills in communications and human relations; and develop

good work habits, attitudes, appreciation, and respect for work

through the work immersion.

II. SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

The sampling technique used is convenience sampling.

Convenience sampling was done to select available Grade 12

Information and Communication Technology students during the

scheduled date of interviews.

Convenience sampling is a non-random sampling designed to

immediately get respondents who are present in the area during

the interview.

The advantages of convenience sampling are the immediacy in

the conduct of the study. There were 5 respondents available on

the Grade 12 Information and Communication Technology Group chat.

The researchers did not select the respondents but rather, they

asked the permission of those who are interested to join the

interview.

VI. VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY

 FACE VALIDITY

In order to heighten the quality of the survey, and to

ensure the clarity of each question, the researchers analyzed

the interview questionnaire to pinpoint the parts that made no

sense, as well as the ones that proved rather difficult to

understand. All of it to make the interview more simplified for

those who are not familiar with the topic entitled “THE IMPACT OF

THE PANDEMIC TO THE ST. AUGUSTINE FOUNDATION COLLEGES GRADE

12 ICT STUDENTS’ WORK IMMERSION EXPERIENCE AT PC HENZ COMPUTER

TRADING”.

 CONTENT VALIDITY

opinions of the respondents regarding “THE IMPACT OF THE

PANDEMIC TO THE ST. AUGUSTINE FOUNDATION COLLEGES GRADE 12 ICT

STUDENTS’ WORK IMMERSION EXPERIENCE AT PC HENZ COMPUTER TRADING”.

 CONSTRUCT VALIDITY

The researchers constructed this research while leaning

towards the very idea that the pandemic will be a lot of hurdles

for the student to overcome during their work immersion activity.

The questions are based on the statement of the problem and in

line with the objectives of the study.

 RELIABILITY

The questions were tested by the researchers’ advisers

who were not a part of the study to check if the questions

can be easily understood. During the interview the

researchers awaited any inquiries or complaints from the

respondent to ensure that the entire question is answered

 SUB-THEME 1: PERSONAL HEALTH

The student’s well-being during their work immersion duration.

 SUB-THEME 2: FAMILY FINANCIAL STATUS

The capability of the student’s family to provide them their

necessities during the work immersion duration.

 SUB-THEME 3: TRANSPORTATION

The factor that enables the student to be able to travel into

their assigned work stations/industries.

 INTERPRETATION

The students’ personal health situation alone can impact

their immersion experience at large scale. Due to the on-going

pandemic, despite not being infected by it, if the student

develops a mild cough they’re immediately put into temporary

suspension.

The students’ family financial status is the second factor

that could affect their immersion experiences. Due to the

pandemic, a lot of the businesses and establishments had

temporarily closed down to lessen the impacts of the pandemic.

Should the students’ parents be one of the unfortunate people to

have lost their work and income temporarily during the pandemic,
St. Augustine Foundation Colleges
of Nueva Ecija, Inc.

it could largely affect the student’s experience. Such as

inability to buy lunches and foods, as well as the fare for the

transportation considering that the prices have also gone up due

to the pandemic.

Transportation is the third major factor when it comes

to work immersion considering that the students have to

travel outside their homes in-order to get into their assigned

industries. The pandemic has affected this factor.
