Since about four years ago when I went to a therapist’s office myself, I’ve decided that is

what I am going to pursue. You may ask, “What is it that psychologists really do? They sure do

make a lot of money for just letting a sad person talk to them for an hour.” Well, they do much

more than that. Allow me to elaborate.

A psychologist’s job is to have sessions with someone who is having mental health

issues, no matter how big or small. A large part of the time, the client doesn’t know what’s

wrong, so it’s the psychologist’s job to figure out what ails them. Many psychologists also do

tests on cognitive behavior in attempts to discover more about the human mind. They are also

tasked with helping the individual find coping mechanisms to keep them from falling deeper into

their problems.

In order to be successful as a psychologist, you must have a vast understanding of

cognitive processes. The way the human brain functions is complicated and sometimes

confusing, which is why psychologists are needed in the first place. It is also important to be

approachable, the entire point of therapy is to listen to your client vent out their problems. It’s

very hard to talk to someone about such deep things when you don’t feel welcomed to do so.

As for education, there are many different colleges that offer courses in California. An

example of this is San Diego State University. This college is located in San Diego, California.

They offer seven different psychology courses, and they offer bachelor degrees. From there,

you could move on to something like Northwestern University. There, they offer a masters

degree. With a masters degree, you can become a full-fledged psychologist. The salary is also

quite exceptional. The average salary for a psychologist is one hundred and thirteen thousand

dollars, which is fifty dollars an hour. I’d say that’s an exceptional amount for what is required.

There are many careers in the field of psychology, it’s not only therapists. There are

careers such as educational psychologists, psychiatrists, forensic psychologists, and many

more. No matter which one of these you go for, the salary is almost guaranteed to be quite

exceptional.
They are all related to the cognitive process of the brain. Plus, due to covid, there is a

very high demand for therapists. Because of this, the industry is doing very well. Most

importantly, those people affected by the virus are getting the help they need.

Now, why do I think I would do well in this field? Ever since I was young, I was interested

in how and why humans do things. What compels them to do what they do? I have always been

very emotionally aware of everyone around me, and I’m usually able to tell when something is

off about someone. I am very approachable and I’m always willing to listen and give advice. I

am very interested in how mental illness comes to fruition and how humans learn to cope and

handle having them. So yes, I believe I would be a good psychologist for anyone who may need

me.
