Problem:

Weld design.

Welded joint is needed to hold bed rail and parts in contact when external load is being
applied. For clear view Picture has been attached.

Assumptions:

• As bed is single so to consider worst case scenario, we assume that person with
weight
• 440.925 lbf (200kg) = 1962N would use it.
• Load on Each side of rail is 220.4625lbf
• All External Load is carried Entirely by shear Force in minimum throat Area.
• Assume Member to be AISI 1006
Calculation:
It will act as beam with two fixed Support on both ends.
P = 220lbf
Shear force on each weld is P/2 = 220/2 =V= 110lbf

L = 75inch

𝑃𝐿
Bending Moment = =M = 2062.5lbinch.

Figure of merit:

➢ To Check which type of welding would be preferable. We have to check figure of merit
for our case.
➢ Dimension of member around which we have to done welding.
Width = b=1.5inch, Length =d= 5.5inch

Case-1
𝑰𝒖
𝒇𝒐𝒎 = 𝟏. 𝟒𝟏𝟒
𝒉𝒍
𝑑3
𝐼𝑢 = l = 5.5in Putting values we get
12

1
𝑓𝑜𝑚 = 3.56

Case-2
𝑰𝒖
𝒇𝒐𝒎 = 𝟏. 𝟒𝟏𝟒
𝒉𝒍
𝑑3
𝐼𝑢 = l = 11in Putting values we get
6
1
𝑓𝑜𝑚 = 3.56

Case-3
𝑰𝒖
𝒇𝒐𝒎 = 𝟏. 𝟒𝟏𝟒
𝒉𝒍
𝑏𝑑2
𝐼𝑢 = = 22.6875in l = 2*b = 3in Putting values
2

1
𝑓𝑜𝑚 = 10.68

Case-4
𝐼𝑢
𝑓𝑜𝑚 = 1.414
ℎ𝑙
𝑑^2
𝐼𝑢 = (6 ∗ 𝑏 + 𝑑) = 36.55in l = 2*b +d = 8.5in Putting values we get
12
1
𝑓𝑜𝑚 = 6.083

Case-5
𝐼𝑢
𝑓𝑜𝑚 = 1.414
ℎ𝑙
Iu = 37.7in l = 12.5inch Putting values
1
𝑓𝑜𝑚 = 4.26

Case-6
𝐼𝑢 𝑑^2
𝑓𝑜𝑚 = 1.414 ℎ𝑙 𝐼𝑢 = (3 ∗ 𝑏 + 𝑑) = 50.4inch l = 2*d + 2*b = 14in Putting values
6

we get
1
𝑓𝑜𝑚 = 5.09

Result:

As fom (figure of merit) of case#3 is large so we would use welding of type 3. Table 9-2
would be follow:

Primary Shear:

V = 110.24lb b = 1.5in

A = 1.414*h*b

𝐴 = 2.12ℎ𝑖𝑛2

𝟓𝟏.𝟗𝟖𝒑𝒔𝒊
𝜏’ = V/A = 𝒉

Tertiary shear:
𝑴∗𝒄
𝜏’” = 𝑰
Bending moment = M = 2062.5lbinch.
Centroid:

x = b/2 and y = d/2 from table 9-2

𝑏 𝑑
c is largest distance from centroid to welding end = 𝑐 = √(2)2 + ( 2 )2 =2.8504in

𝑏∗𝑑^2
IU = = 22.6875𝒊𝒏𝟑
2

Second polar moment of Area = I = 0.708*h*IU = 16.04𝒉𝒊𝒏𝟐 Putting values we get

𝑴∗𝒄 𝟑𝟔𝟕.𝟑𝟒𝐩𝐬𝐢 𝟎.𝟑𝟕𝟏𝒌𝐩𝐬𝐢

𝜏’” = = =
𝑰 𝒉 𝒉

Shear stress Maximum:

𝜏 = √(𝛕′)^𝟐 + (𝛕′′′)^𝟐

Putting values, we get

𝛕𝐦𝐚𝐱= 𝟑𝟔𝟕. 𝟑𝟒/𝒉 𝒑𝒔𝒊

For material AISI NO 1006:

Cold rolled parent material become more like hot rolled in vicinity of weld therefore using
Table A-20 AISI NO 1006 (HR)

SY = 24kpsi Sul = 43kpsi

𝜏allow = 0.3* Sul or 𝜏allow = 0.4* SY

𝜏allow = min (12.9kpsi, 9.6kpsi)

So 𝜏allow = 9.6kpsi

𝟎.𝟑𝟕𝟏𝒌𝒑𝒔𝒊
𝜏max = 𝒉

Putting 𝜏max = 9.6kpsi

h>0.0386in
As electrode material should be stronger than member material so from Table 9-6
Preferable electrode is E60XX

Allowable shear stress of electrode = 18kspsi > Allowable shear stress of member

For leg size of weld Table 9-6:

𝟏
h = 𝟏𝟔

length of weld is = 2*b = 3in

Final Design:

Pattern CASE -3, Weld on top and bottom

TYPE Fillet Weld

Electrode E60XX

Length of Weld 3inch

Leg size 1/16inch
