PRELIMINARY REPORT FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PRIVATE

SCHOOL IN ANY PART OF NIGERIA

PREAMBLE: Education is a vital tool for the economic advancement of a nation.


Every child deserves a right to qualitative education but not every child has access
to qualitative education. Though, qualitative education is said to be expensive but it
is opined that no amount of resources can buy knowledge especially if the vessels
God uses to impact this knowledge are diligent in the business. The Government
has done her bid in providing affordable education for Nigerian Residents but her
effort must be complemented by the private sector to meet the yearnings of the
people. Currently the Nigerian private sector educational system has segregated
the schools into:

 Schools for the very high income earners.


 Schools for high income earners.
 Schools for middle class income earners.
 Schools for low income earners.

This report covers basic needs for establishment of a Nursery/Primary School and it
is subject to additive or subtractive review.

MAJOR CONSIDERATIONS FOR ESTABLISHING A SCHOOL:

 Permanent Land Facility: There must be a landed property for citing of the
school but there can be leverage for use of temporary/rented sites provided
the school has its own landed property.
 Security of the Area: The school must be welcomed by members of the
community where it is located to avoid unnecessary harassments while a
security communication link should be established between the school and
the nearest security outfit for emergency situations. It is also advisable to
employ the services of private security personnel.
 Security of Staff and Pupils: The school must map out strategies to ensure
security of Staff and Pupils during and after school hours.
 Accessibility: The school must have access roads linking her to urban and
sub-urban residential communities. Bus services can be applied to reduce
problems of accessibility.
 Well Planned Structures: Development of a school can be done easily in
stages and phases. However, it will be a night mare if the structures are not
well planned and phases/stages of development carefully mapped out.
 Targeted Market: This is totally dependent on the school’s Governing Board
to determine the social status of parents projected as patronisers of the
school. But it is always advisable to place the school on pedestal where all
classes of people can ride on at the start.
 School colour: This is exclusively the decision of the Governing Board.
 School Mission/Vision/Anthem: This is also an exclusive decision of the
Governing board

CHOICE OF CURRICULUM/SUBJECTS TO BE TAUGHT:

Private schools in Nigeria operate basically on the different curriculums named


below;

 State Ministry of Education Curriculum.


 The National Council on Education (NCE) Curriculum.
 The Federal Ministry of Education Curriculum.
 Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC)
Curriculum.
 The Universal Basic Education (UBE) Curriculum.
 ABEKA Curriculum (for schools under “Association of Christian Schools
International”).
 The British American Curriculum.
 Kiddies Vocational Curriculum.

Subjects to be taught are largely dependent on the choice of curriculum. It is


recommended that curriculums should be combined to reflect Nigerian and foreign
academic standards.

GOVERNMENT APPROVALS:

Operators of private schools are to seek and obtain different stages of approval
from the following government agencies;

 State Primary Education Board


 Local Education Authority
 State Ministry of Education
 State Schools Examination Council
 State Internal Revenue Commission
 Ministry of Commerce and Tourism
 Cooperate Affairs Commission

These approvals are obtained at different stages and the requirements are often
the same though there are disparities in the level of working relationship of the
people in these offices.
BASIC FACILITIES:

Basic facilities required for effective operation of a school are but not limited to the
following;

 Class Rooms: This must be well ventilated with attractive wall paintings and
charts reflecting instructional materials. It must have all adequate facilities
and be spacious. It must have nature corners, writing boards and timetable
boards.
 School Hall: This hall can be used for examinations, conferences and other
occasions, however this facility becomes necessary when the school is
moving towards writing her first external examination.
 School Clinic: This is essential as the health of a child is of utmost importance
to the overall learning ability of a child.
 School Library: A school without a library is no school.
 School Canteen: This is optional as a school can operate without a canteen
depending on her policy.
 School Bookshop: It is advisable for every school to sell the recommended
textbooks in school.
 School Chapel: Chapel is built base on religious belief of the founders.

STAFF: To facilitate your vision, competent staff should be employed which


include;

Administrative Staff: School Administrator, Supervisors and School Accountant

Non-teaching Staff: Typist, Cleaners, School Nurse, School Clerk, Laboratory


Attendants, Librarian and Security Guard.

Teaching Staff: There must be at least two teachers for a class and subject
teachers for the secondary.

For a convenient take off, the school must start with the following personnel with
minimum academic qualifications as follows; School Administrator (minimum
B.Sc./HND with A degree in Educatio), School Clerk (SSCE), School Accountant
(minimum SSCE), School Nurse (minimum SSCE), Security Guard (minimum FSLC),
Cleaners (minimum FSLC), Class teachers (NCE/ND/HND/B.Sc.) and Assistant class
teachers (SSCE/NCE/ND).

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Other activities such as sports, club activities


(debates, JETS, dramatic, music, farmers etc.), excursions, foreign languages
(French, German and Spanish) and quiz competitions should be regular activities of
a school community.

EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS: The School will have to seek approvals to be


centers of the following examinations; First School Leaving Examinations, Basic
Education Certificate Examinations (NECO & STATE), State SS2 Promotional
Examinations, Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (NECO &
WASSCE), Cambridge O’ Levels and A’ Levels, TOEFL and IELTS.

NAME OF THE SCHOOL: This is based on the Proprietor’s philosophy. Names can
be chosen from objects, natural creations, biblical names, family names,
inspirational words etc. But it is always preferable to personalise a school name.
Suggested names are as follows but not limited to;

 Linusjane Schools

SUMMARY: This preliminary report aims at giving an overview of the general


requirements for establishment of a decent and qualitative school community. More
detailed reports to come subsequently as site is seen and major decisions as
advised by the report is taken by the Proprietor.
