Structuring Process
Current progress
 Planning
 Analysis
 Design
 Implementation
 Maintenance
Business Process Reengineering (BPR)
● Reorganize data flow to eliminate unnecessary steps
● Achieve synergy between previously separate steps
● Become more responsive to future changes
● Can be achieved through creative application of information technologies
Key business processes
- structured, measured set of activities designed to produce a specific output for a particular
customer or market (focus on outcome/product).

Key activities need radical change:

● Importance of activity to delivering an outcome
● Feasibility of changing the activity
● Level of dysfunction of current activity

Data Flow Diagram (DFD)

Specific rules and guidelines to draw data flow diagrams that lead to accurate and well-structured
process models.
DFD - Data Store
Data stores are usually given a unique reference number, such as D1, D2, D3
Represents a:
● Database
● Computerized file
● Filing cabinet

DFD - Rules (½) DFD - Rules (2/2)

 Process Data Flow
 Data Store
 Entity

DFD - Progression to Physical

Current Logical Data Flow Diagram New Logical Data Flow Diagram

New Physical Data Flow Diagram

DFD - Logical
Better communication with users, More stable systems, Better understanding of the business by
analysts, Flexibility and maintenance, Elimination of redundancy and easier creation of the
physical mode.

DFD - Physical
Clarifying which processes are performed by humans and which are automated,Describing
processes in more detail,Sequencing processes that have to be done in a particular order,Identifying
temporary data stores,Specifying actual names of files and printouts, Adding controls to ensure the
processes are done properly.
DFD - Contents of Physical DFD
● Manual processes
● Processes for adding, deleting, changing, and updating records
● Data entry and verifying processes
● Validation processes for ensuring accurate data input
● Sequencing processes to rearrange the order of records
● Processes to produce every unique system output
● Intermediate data stores
● Actual file names used to store data
● Controls to signify completion of tasks or error conditions

Understanding the Data Dictionary

Provide documentation Eliminate redundancy Validate the data flow diagram
