I. Rewrite the sentences in Reported Speech. Change pronouns and time expressions
when necessary. Note the changes in tenses.
a. She said, “I’m ready.”
She said that she was ready.
b. They said, “We’re busy.”
They said that they were busy.
c. He said, “I know a better restaurant.”
He said that he knew a better restaurant.
d. She said, “I woke up early.”
She said that she had woken up early.
e. He said, “I will ring her.”
He said that he would ring her.
f. They said, “We have just arrived.”
They said that they had just arrived.
g. He said, “I will clean the car”.
He said that he would clean the car.
h. She said, “I did not say that.”
She said that she had not said that.
i. She said, “I don’t know where my shoes are”.
She said that she didn’t know where my shoes were.
j. He said, “I won’t tell anyone”.
He said that he wouldn’t tell anyone.

II. Rewrite the sentences in Reported Speech. Note when it is an order or a true fact,
and the change of pronouns in some sentences.
a. “Stop talking joe”, the teacher said.
The teacher told Joe to stop talking.
b. “Be patient”, she said to him.
She told him to be patient.
c. “Go to your room”, her father said to her.
Her father told her to go her room.
 d. “Hurry up”, she said to us.
She told us to hurry up.
e. “Give me the key”, he told her.
He asked her to give him the key.
f. “Play it again, Sam”, she said.
She asked Sam to play it again.
g. “Sit down, Caron.” He said.
He asked Caron to sit down.
h. “Fill in the form, Sir”, the receptionist said.
The receptionist asked the guest to fill in the form.
i. “Take off your shoes”, she told us.
She told us to take off your shoes.
j. “Mind your own business”, she told him.
She told him to mind his own business.

III. Read to what Wendy and Paul said about their jobs. Then, choose one of the
stories and re write at least 7 sentences in Reported Speech.

Wendy:
She had moved from home at 17 to live in the Nurses Home, she started her nursing training,
and it had been a shock. In your first week, she had been expected to shower elderly men and
women – She had never even seen a naked person in the flesh, let alone she touched one!
Hospital training in those days had been very strict – they had been not allowed to sit around
and chat to the patients, every bed or table had to line up straight to each other, and they had
to stand every time a Nursing Sister entered the room. But she knew that there is where she
had learned responsibility, accountability, determination and the skills to get on with all types
of people in the world. Her first job had shaped her whole life!
