By unanimous vote of the Board, Southern California Transit Advocates supports Assembly Bill 917
Vehicles: video imaging of parking violations.

As amended, this bill authorizes all public transit operators to install automated forward facing parking
control devices on transit vehicles for the purposes of enforcing parking violations occurring in transit-
only traffic lanes and at transit stops. San Francisco and New York have experienced a reduction in
violations since installing such devices on transit vehicles.

This will provide an important enforcement mechanism for dedicated bus lanes which are a key strategy
to encourage mode shift by making transit competitive and operate more efficiently. Livability, reducing
greenhouse gases, and lessening the impact of cars on the urban landscape will all be enhanced by
making bus lanes more effective.

Los Angeles Metro’s NextGen program to improve transit ridership depends on components to enhance
the customer experience including a network of bus lanes and Bus Rapid Transit. Passage of this bill is
key to the future of our region, as signified by Metro being a co-sponsor.
