IDEAS FOR MATH VIDEO By Nalini Seecharan

 The beginning of the video can start with a fun, simple background audio
like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ljwq4vFvNNw for about
5 – 8 seconds
 Whilst that audio is being played, there should be simple writings on the
screen like “3 UNIQUE WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD’S MATH
LEARNING” proposed by a group of students from the University of
Trinidad and Tobago”

 Dialogue:
 “Are you a number one supporter in your child’s math learning?
 “A group of university students has conducted a research on parental
involvement in their child’s math learning. From that study, it was
established that parents fail to recognise that their support is one of the
greatest resources to enhance their child’s learning. It was also
recognised that most parents are unaware of how to assist their child in
math at home!
 With the help of recent research, we have revised strategies that can
encourage parental math involvement. In this video, we are going to
share with you 3 UNIQUE WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S MATH
LEARNING!!

 These three strategic methods are 1) Displaying positive behaviours

towards the topic/subject, 2 )Seek interest in your child’s performance
and 3)ENGAGE YOUR CHILD IN MATH TALK.

 STRATEGY ONE:
You can use clips from this video to assist in the first strategy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGJ39w9fQuM
 Do you avoid helping your child with math?
 Is it because you are afraid of math? Or you just don’t like it?
 If so, then this is one major contribution to preventing you child from
learning the subject.
 Let’s take a look at an example. Let’s say your child asks you for help in
their math homework. Do not display any negativity towards the subject
or topic like use facial expressions to display that you don’t want to help,
or use phrases like, “Why is Math important? I never use algebra in real
life! Math is difficult, and if you don’t pass your exams I understand why
because I also did not do too well!”
 What this tends to do, is to create a mindset that they are not doers of
math…. which only worsens the problem.
 Instead try using a different approach:
 Some of which are, “I understand how difficult this is for you. It was
difficult for me too,” or “Don’t worry if it feels like math problems take
more effort than some of your other assignments. You may not
understand it yet, but I am confident we can work it out together.”
 You won’t believe how effective your words are….That takes us to the
second strategy which is

STRATEGY TWO
 Seek interest in your child’s learning.
 Effective communication between the parent – teacher – and school is
vital!
 Extend a hand to your child’s teacher/ school.
 Try regularly communicating with the teacher to determine the
performance of your child. Research has shown that this assist in the
holistic and math development of your child because they feel important
and worthy. This further encourages a growth mindset where your child
sees him/herself as a ‘doer of math…and even if they are faced with math
problem solving difficulties, it does not discourage rather it motivates the
child”.

 Parents who are either too busy at work or those who avoid helping their
child, again only worsens the learning!

STRATEGY THREE
 Metacognitive thinking.
 Using the “think aloud” method to encourage math talk with your child.
Just being able to encourage your child to verbalizing their thoughts can
help them make more sense of the material and internalize it more
deeply. Talking aloud is a great way to test how well they really know the
material/ maths concepts. In courses that require problem solving, allow
them to explain the steps aloud which will ensure that they really
understand them and expose any gaps in knowledge that they might have.
Ask them questions about what they are doing and why.
 Math is not only arithmetic, there is more to it!
 Parents, do not be fooled. Math is everywhere!
 Try encouraging your child in math talk, especially with numbers that
really matter.
 Allow them to self-reflect, the key to metacognition is allowing them to
asking their self some self-reflective questions, which are powerful
because they allow us to take inventory of where we currently are
(thinking about what we already know), how we learn (what is working
and what is not), and where we want to be (accurately gauging if we’ve
mastered the material). Metacognition helps you to be a self-aware
problem solver and take control of your learning.
 Let’s look at an example, simply in your kitchen!
 Allow your child to help you cook! Use math talk when communicating
with each other.

 Like “The recipe says put four cups of water to boil.” Set out your
measuring utensils and guide the child along the way. Allow them to
think creatively, and feel free to switch it up at times.
 For example, let them use a 1/3 measuring cup to do the job of filling the
pot with 4 cups of water. This encourages them to critically think, all
whilst developing motor skills.
