Developmental Lesson Plan

Plant Parts and Their Functions

Teacher Candidate: Marissa Rapposelli

Date: 4/13/2021

Group Size: 25

Allotted Time: 60 Minutes

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Subject or Topic: Parts and Functions of Plants

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

● Standard - 3.1.3.A5 Identify the structures in plants that are responsible for
food production, support, water transport, reproduction, growth, and
protection

Learning Targets/Objectives:

● The 3rd grade students will be able to explain the parts and the functions of a
plant by creating a 3-page foldable that explains the parts and the functions of
a plant.

● The 3rd grade students will be able to explain chlorophyll by creating their
drawing of a diagram with leaves.
Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1. Guided Notes YouTube Sheet 1. Observation/Completion

2. Foldable 2. Observation/Completion
3. Chlorophyll Drawing 3. Final Product

Assessment Scale:

The scale will be out of 4:

4- Exemplary (The students show all 4 parts of the plant and show their function in
activity 1..)

3- Satisfactory (The students show 2-3 parts and only some functions on activity 1.)

<2 – Needs Improvement (The student shows 1< parts of the plants or 2< functions
on activity 1.)

/4 Points

Students are exemplary if they score 4 points. Students are satisfactory if they score
3 points. Students need remediation if students have below 2 points, they will need
to relearn the parts of the plants and their functions.

Subject Matter/Content:

Prerequisites:

● Students know what a plant is.

● Students know that a plant is a living thing.
● Students know that plants have parts and functions.

Key Vocabulary:

● Roots: Take in water and other nutrients from the ground/soil

● Stem: Holds the plants up, moves water and other nutrients through it
● Leaf: Uses light, air, and water and other nutrients (photosynthesis) to make
food for the plant
● Flower: Make the fruits that hold the seeds
● Chlorophyll: is a green pigment found in plants. Plants use chlorophyll and
light to make food.
● Photosynthesis: the process by which green plants and some other organisms
use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.
Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and
generates oxygen as a byproduct.

Content/Facts:

● Each part of the plant plays an important role which helps the plant grow,
survive, and reproduce through seeds and fruits.
● Plants have chlorophyll, a green pigment necessary for photosynthesis.
● There are other parts of a plant including fruits and seeds

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies: (10 Minutes)

● Good morning everyone! I hope we all have had a great start to our day,
yesterday we talked about the life cycle of a plant. I also mentioned
something at the end of class, does anyone remember? (allow time for
students to think and answer)
● Thank you everyone for those answers, just to recap I asked you all to think
for today’s class to think if you know any parts of a plant. Also, what their
functions could be! On top of thinking about the functions, how do you think
these parts help the plants survive?
● Now let us watch a quick video, we will be doing guided notes along with it
so keep in mind to have your listening ears on!
○ Guided note worksheet is at the bottom of the page for the students to
fill in and color for information.

Development/Teaching Approaches: (40-45 Minutes)

● The teacher will start the class after the guided notes start on their foldable.
The students will be given a blank piece of paper and their materials.
(Activity 1)
● The students will be given a blank sheet of paper that is already pre-cut for
them. You will guide the students through the drawing of the plant on the front.
● In the first top box they will draw seeds and label it.
● In the second box down, they will draw a flower with seeds in the middle label
it.
● In the third box down, they will draw a stem with a leaf or two label it.
● In the fourth box down, they will draw a stem and label it.
● In the fifth and final box at the bottom they will draw roots and label it
● The students will flip to the inside and on the top left box the students will
label ‘Functions of Each Part.’
● This will remind the students when they flip over the functions of each part
will be on the inside of their foldable.
● The students will label each box on the right that corresponds with its part on
the front of the foldable.
● Once allowing them to take on their activity walk around and keep an eye on
students and help them where needed.
● Then start on the understanding of chlorophyll for students. Review the plant
life cycle with the students and explain how plants get food and which parts do
as such through Photosynthesis.
● Create an anchor chart while going through the Photosynthesis cycle with the
students.
● Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms
use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis
in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates
oxygen as a byproduct.
● Chlorophyll can be seen in leaves and can be seen with the naked eye and can
be seen under a microscope.
● The students will then be given a plain sheet of paper and a green leaf. Each
student will be given a different type of leaf.
● Model to students how you can draw and do things with chlorophyll and
leaves. Allow students to create a plant drawing with their leaf pieces.
● Allow students to draw and explore chlorophyll in this lesson.
● Then instruct students to take a picture of their artwork and upload to their
SeeSaw.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:

● Thank you all so much for your hard work learning about plant parts and their
functions, plus how they get their food through photosynthesis.
● Can anyone please recap what we learned today?
● Thank you all so much for that! For tomorrow let us think if trees are plants or
not! Thank long and hard and come to class ready to learn about it.

Accommodations/Differentiation:

Accommodations: The student that we are accommodating for is a male ELL

student whose first language is Spanish.

● The YouTube video there is an option for Spanish subtitles which I would pop
up on the screen for our student.
● The rest of the activities with the worksheets that are given I would have both
the English and Spanish translations on the worksheets.
● When the student is working in a group the other students can help guide the
Spanish speaking student.

Differentiation:

● For students who are struggling- The teacher could have a word bank or less to
fill in for the student on the guided notes so they can focus on the video more.
The teacher could also try to keep a close eye on the student when walking
around.
● For students that are accelerated learners- The teacher could have the student
write a summary about how the plants and functions work to help a plant
survive.
