5E – MIDTERM TEST PHONOLOGY

1. Phonetic and Phonemic

● Phonemic is how we undertanding the individual sounds. phonemic also is the
smallest unit of phonology. Example : how we pronounce “kit”, we can divide
the sound of each words like : /k/, /ɪ/,/t/
● Phonetic focuses on the production of the world’s speech sounds. The
production of speech looks at the interaction of different vocal organs which
can be seen in International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), example : pen /pen/, tea
/ ti:/. etc
2. Differences between British and American accent
Native speakers have a variety of accents that make it hard to understand each
other. This is even more true for native English speakers from different
countries.
● Spelling
This spelling occur for external reasons. The slight spelling differences can be
understood by both american and british speakers: hence, the relatively
standard english may be rensposible for keeping the varieties mutually
understandble.
● Pronunciation
The vowel systems different between american and british. For instance, the
vowels in the words dance, example, half, fast, bath, have, in general, an [a:]
in dialects spoken in british, while in american the vowel is pronounced [æ].
However, before /r/ and in words spelled with american use [a:] as in far, car,
calm, and palm.
● Stress
Verbs ending with -ate are usually stressed on the first syllable in american,
but on the ending in british. Some longer words, usually with four syllables,
ending with -ary, - ery, or –ory, also have different stress.

STRESS a word with more one syllable. The patterns are, to some extent,
systematic and can be sorted by syllable, suffixes, and whether a word is loan word
or not

● British : /ˈkɒməntri/
● American : /ˈkɑːmənteri/
2. Category
● British : /ˈkætəɡəri/
● American : /ˈkætəɡɔːri/

The syllable is a constant feature in every spoken language in the world and most
people have an intuitive sense of what a syllable is. Each language has its own
rules about what kinds of syllables are allowed, and what kinds aren’t, but the
general structure is the same everywhere.
