fact:
The large number of theories about the identity of the murderer, ranging from the famous
Victorian painter Walter Sickert to a Polish immigrant and to the grandson of Queen Victoria,
have contributed to a culture of folklore and macabre entertainment.
The name of "Jack the Ripper" originated in a letter allegedly written by the murderer in 1888.
However, the authenticity of the letter has been much debated.
The East End was a district seen by the respectable society of London, either out of compassion
or contempt. Despite being an area where qualified immigrants, mainly Jews, and Russians,
arrived to start a new life and build businesses, the neighborhood was known for extreme
poverty, violence and crime. According to modern criminal investigations, this was the main
reason why Jack the Ripper chose that specific area to commit his horrific crimes.
