Difficulties in Measuring the Intelligence of Machines

For individuals to appreciate whether machines are becoming smarter, they require to

measure their IQ. However, apparent intricacies emanate with such approaches, particularly the

AI plethora approaches and the methodologies technologies employ while constructing

intelligent machines.

One intricacy involves the symbols utilized while universally Turing these machines. The

most successful products are expert systems. Conversely, there are the connectionists, which

mimic the human brain by constructing artificial neural networks. Several encouraging

developments have emanated from a connectionist structural design primarily used in machine

learning and pattern recognition. Other technologies employ hybrid approaches that fall amid

these two ends. Several intricacies emerge from comparing these variable machines’ IQ. One

complexity emanates when one supposes I to be the machine’s information input, and O being

the output. A common T lacks, where T signifies I’s transformation into O. Proposing a universal

IQ testing method must enclose a caution that the process applies to all machines regardless of

their internal T (Zarkadakis, 2012). Meaning that individuals agree to test for intelligence

irrespective of whatever happens inside the device, equivalent to testing the IQ of intelligent

biological persons who have evolved on diverse planets.

An additional insightful intricacy for universal IQ testing involves the inherent

definitions. The term intelligence has several meanings. Many people interpret the term

differently, making it essential for individuals to be explicit. To surmount intelligence semantics,

individuals must discern the original objectives of AI. Primarily, AI aims to realize four goals for

intelligent machines: Humane thinking, acting humanly, rational thought, and acting rationally.

Consequently, to espouse a universal IQ, individuals must ignore a machine’s internal

mechanisms that transform inputs to outputs and only measure the degree of rational outcomes.
