1 Purpose
This document provides instructions for unpacking, installing, and configuring the hardware for workstation
configurations.

Before unpacking the system, check the packaging for any obvious signs of damage. If you notice any damage,
stop and do the following:
● Inform the customer of the damage.
● Instruct the customer to work with the shipping department to resolve the matter.
IMPORTANT: Do not plug workstation into power outlet until Lantronix dongle is properly connected.

1. Call the application engineer who will be completing the installation of the software.
2. Obtain the required system role for the workstation from the application engineer.
3. Unpack the workstation. Verify that the product is not scratched or damaged, and then review the contents
of the box and make sure you have the following:
● HP Z8 G4 Workstation
● Mouse
● Keyboard
● Power cord
● Monitor
● Lantronix Spider Duo dongle kit
● Network switch
● Accessory kit
● Display-to-VGA adapter
● Network cables (3)
● Serial Number labels
● Tag for connecting the serial number labels to the workstation

IMPORTANT: When performing the following steps, take all necessary precautions to protect against
electrostatic discharge (ESD).
Before unpacking the system, check the packaging for any obvious signs of damage. If you notice any damage,

1. Unpack the workstation. Verify that the product is not scratched or damaged, and then review the contents
of the box and make sure you have the following:
● HP Z840 Workstation
● Mouse
● Keyboard
● Power cord
● Monitor
● Network switch
● Accessory kit
● Network cables (3)
2. Connect the monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the rear of the workstation.
3. Connect the network to network port 2 on the workstation.
4. Connect the power cable to the workstation.
5. Boot the workstation.
6. Complete the instructions in Initial operating system setup on page 23.
NOTE: The power cable, VGA adapter cable and LAN cables are excluded from the previous graphic.
Cables Connections
(2) — Display-to-VGA adapter ● The (2) Display-to-VGA adapter’s display port connector connects to port 1 on the
GPU card in the workstation.
● The (2) Display-to-VGA adapter’s VGA port connects to the (3) computer input
cable’s VGA connector.
(3) — Computer input cable ● The (3) computer input cable USB plugs into a USB port on the workstation.
● The (3) computer input cable VGA connector connects to the (2) Display-to-VGA
adapter VGA connector.
● The (3) computer input cable display port connector plugs into the display port on
the (1) Lantronix Spider Duo.
(4) — Local KVM cable ● The (4) Local KVM cable’s HDMI connector plugs into the (1) Lantronix Spider Duo’s
Local KVM HDMI port.
● The mouse and keyboard plug into the (4) Local KVM cable’s two USB ports.
Cables Connections
● The (4) Local KVM cable’s VGA connector plugs into VGA adapter cable (not shown),
which then connects to the monitor.
(5) — Configuration cable ● The (5) configuration cable’s serial connector connects to the workstation serial
port.
● The (5) configuration cable’s ethernet connector connects to the (1) Lantronix
Spider Duo ethernet port.
The following figure depicts the installed configuration of the Lantronix Spider Duo dongle. The steps in the next
section provide guidance on the installation.

2. Connect the VGA connector on the Computer Input cable (3) to the VGA port on the adapter (2), and then
connect the USB cable to an available port on the workstation.

3. Connect the Ethernet-to-VGA configuration cable (5) to the network port on the rear of the Lantronix
dongle, and then to the VGA port on the back of the workstation.

2. Connect the Local KVM cable (4) to the Local KVM port available on the Lantronix dongle (1).

3. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the USB ports on Local KVM cable (4), and then connect the serial
cable to the monitor.
The monitor connection is not shown in the following figure.

4. Connect the power cord to the Lantronix dongle, and then plug it into an available outlet.
When the workstation boots up for the first time, follow these steps for the initial configuration of the system.
If a message displays asking to format disk R:, click X to close the message.
Set up Windows
1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to login.
2. Click Administrator or Unicorn user.
7. When prompted, enter a new Name for the computer, and then click OK.

NOTE: Do not use symbols other than the dash when naming the computer. Computer names are limited
to 14 characters.
8. The Date and Time dialog displays. Click Change time zone.

9. The Time Zone Settings dialog displays. Select the local time zone, and then click OK.

10. The Date and Time dialog displays. Click the Change date and time.
11. In the Date and Time Settings window, use the controls to change the date and time, and then click OK.

12. Click OK to close the Date and Time dialog. The workstation automatically reboots.
On the IN100T Z840 workstation, a Fatal firmware error might display after the device reboots. Click
Dismiss to clear the error message. There is no issue.

2. The Network and Sharing Center window displays. Click External Network.

4. The External Network Properties dialog displays. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then
click Properties.

5. The Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) dialog displays. Select the Use the following IP address option,
and then type the IP address, Subnet mask, Default gateway, and DNS server IP addresses in the
appropriate text boxes.

5. The External Network Properties dialog displays. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then
click Properties.

6. The Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) dialog displays. Select the Use the following IP address option,
and then type the IP address, Subnet mask, Default gateway, and DNS server IP addresses in the
appropriate text boxes.

Run HP Radar
Install any updates that are downloaded by HP Radar on all servers before running Windows Update.
1. On the server desktop, click Start > All Programs > HP Radar, and then select HP Radar.
2. The HP Radar screen opens. Click Check for updates.
3. After checking for updates, select the Solutions tab. For each update listed, click Download. The update
files are downloaded to the computer.
4. After the software is successfully downloaded, the Download button changes into an Install button. Under
the Action column for HP Radar, click Install.
5. The software installation for the update launches. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the
update installation.
6. After the software updates successfully, return to the HP Radar window, and then click Install on the next
update in the list. Repeat this process until all software updates are installed. Close the HP Radar window.
1. On the desktop, click Start, click All Programs, and then select Windows Update.
2. Click Check for updates.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to apply any updates.
2. Plug in the power for the Lantronix Spider Duo and then turn on the Workstation.
3. Copy the installer package for SecureLinx Spider Viewer to the desktop.
4. Click through the installer, accepting all defaults.
5. After Spider Viewer installs, double-click the Spider Viewer icon on the desktop to open the program.
6. In Spider Viewer, click the Configuration drop-down menu, and then select Find New Devices.
7. Right-click the device. If there are multiple devices. Check the Mac Address printed on the Lantronix label
for the correct device.
8. Select Initial Device Setup. Note the IP address of the Lantronix Spider Duo.
9. Open a browser, and then navigate to the IP address of the Lantronix Spider Duo.
10. Log in to the Lantronix Spider Duo with the following credentials:
● User: sysadmin
● Password: PASS
11. Type the new password, Barack2006, and then click Save.
12. Create the standard Indigo User for the Spider Duo.
a. Click the User Accounts tab, and then the User/Group link.

● Password = Barak2006
d. Click Save.
e. Assign a Host name to the Spider Duo.
i. Open a browser, and then navigate to the IP of the Spider Duo.

ii. Log in using the sysadmin user. Password is PASS. Password is case-sensitive.

iii. After the first login, the sysadmin user requires a new password. Type Barak2006, and then
click Save.

iv. After the password is changed, a confirmation message displays. Click the Home button.

vi. Change the Host name to ILO followed by the workstation serial number, and then click Save.
vii. The system briefly shows a notification screen, and then disconnects as the Spider Duo resets
for the new Host name to take effect.
viii. Input the IP auto configuration, IP address, Subnet mask, and the Gateway IP address and then
click Save.
ix. The system briefly shows a notification screen, and then disconnects as the Spider Duo resets
for the new IP address to take effect. Any subsequent login requires typing the new address into
a browser.
f. Put the new Host name and IP address on the Lantronix Spider Duo.

This chapter describes how to install the sliding rack mount kit on an IN100T Z840 workstation. It also describes
how to install the workstation into a rack.
Tools required
● T-15 Torx screwdriver
● Flathead screwdriver
5. Use a T-15 Torx screwdriver to remove the long screw that secures the rear handle, and then remove the
handle.

6. Lift the rear edge of the top cover at the center, press on the front edge of the top cover, and then slide the
cover toward the rear of the workstation.

NOTE: The bottom of the chassis becomes the left side for mounting.
2. Attach the flange using a T-15 Torx screwdriver and two M4 screws.

3. If necessary, use a flathead screwdriver to pry the clip off the inner slide, and then reposition to the desired
length.

4. Align the inner slide with the two screw holes on the left side of the chassis.
5. Attach the inner slide using a T-15 Torx screwdriver and two M4 screws.
6. Repeat steps 1-5 to mount the rail to the right side of the chassis.

NOTE: There are two KVM adapters in the rail mount kit. If using the KVM adapter with the DVI port.
5. Connect the KVM Console USB Interface Adapter VGA connector to the VGA port on the back of the
workstation. This might require a DVI to VGA adapter.
6. Connect one side of an ethernet cable to the KVM Console USB Interface Adapter Ethernet connector, and
the other side to an open port on the KVM switch.
7. Connect an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the workstation, and then to an open port on the server
rack switch.
8. Connect a power cable to the back of the workstation, and then to an open power port on the server power
strip.

5. From the Boot Menu, select the hard drive in the workstation which contains the recovery partition.

● To reimage the system, select Install Windows, and then follow the on-screen instructions to
complete a fresh install of the Windows operating system.

5. Select UEFI - Sandisk Cruzer Fit to restore the system from the SD card.
6. Follow the on screen instructions. The Z8 G4 will restart and the workstation completes the operation.
NOTE: If a blue Recovery screen displays, the incorrect selection was made.
