CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Lighting is the presence of light to achieve a brightness or effects in a specific

area. Switching on or off the lights requires too much effort because you need to

go to its switch. Some switch is placed on the walls that is far from the couch or

bed. Nowadays, switches of lights may come in different forms these includes

using remote, wall switch, push button, etc.

Smartphones requires application for it to function that is why the researchers will

develop an application that is able to switch on or off the light. Creating this

application will require ARDUINO technology that will enable the smartphone to

use in a specific function such turning on or off the lights. Using this application

will help the people to switch turn on and off their lights using smartphone that is

why it will help them to control their lights easily.

Nowadays, most problem occurs when switching on/off the light bulb using the

switch is that it is vulnerable to electric shock or some time the light bulb is not

turning on/off or it takes longer to turn it on or off.

In addition, before going to the bed to sleep it takes time to switch on/off the light

bulb because the switch is too far or too high. For instance, replacement of

incandescent light bulbs in the different house with energy-efficient compact

fluorescent lamps (CFL) or LED light bulbs is always happening.

1|Page
However, this activity is contributing to the carbon emissions or interfering with

delicate ecosystems through light pollution. According to Mara Bermudez on her

article about educate how does outdoor lighting cause light pollution, light

pollution is also known as ‘photo-pollution’ or ‘luminous’ pollution, is the

excessive, misdirected or invasive use of artificial outdoor lighting.

In some mansions or big houses, the switches position of light bulb is too far from

the couch or on the bed so in some scenarios like before sleeping at night, turning

off the light is being forgotten due to sleepiness.

Also, those person with disabilities that living alone cannot reach the switch of the

light that is why they had hard time on turning off the lights. Because of these

activities many accidents may happen such as fire or electric shocks also the

electric bill will rise. These happens because the lights or other appliances are

being forgotten to turn it off.

With the incidents presented, the researchers will create a lighting system that can

turn on or off a light with an improvise remote that is user friendly.it is user-

friendly in a sense that it will make the user feel at ease or it has a certain

instruction on how to use the lighting system.

Objectives of the Study

The general objective of the study is to develop a lighting system using

ARDUINO technology that aims to use the light anywhere in the house without

using the main switch and to improve safety among the people.

Specifically, the study aims to:

2|Page
• Design a Bluetooth lampshade using ARDUINO technology with the

following features:

• A remote-control Bluetooth lampshade that is present in a form of

application of a smartphone.

• An instruction on how to use the application.

• Fabricate the prototype as designed.

• Test the prototype in terms of functionality, reliability, and effectiveness

of the system.

• Evaluation of the prototype.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The researchers will develop a lighting system using ARDUINO technology that

will help the people use their lights with a specific function to avoid certain

accidents such as fire and electric shock. The system includes a proper setting in a

form of application. The instruction is also included in the application. The

system is only applicable to the smartphones that have this application.

However, the application will function only if the smartphone is applicable or can

handle this type of application. To connect the lighting system to the smartphone

the researchers will program the lighting system to have a Bluetooth connection

for the smartphone will have access to the lighting system.

Review of Related Literature

Arduino

According to Kushner (2011) there are Arduino-based breathalyzers, LED cubes,

home-automation systems, Twitter displays, and even DNA analysis kits. There

are Arduino parties and Arduino clubs. Google has recently released an Arduino-

based development kit for its Android smartphone. As Dale Dougherty, the editor

and publisher of Make magazine, the bible of DIY builders, puts it, Arduino has

become "the brains of maker projects."

According to Nick Health (2017) The Arduino venture gives a straightforward

method to individuals to begin making their own natively constructed devices.

The task offers every one of the fixings that maturing gadgets specialists require:

the equipment, programming, and a dynamic group to help new clients by means

of gatherings and online instructional exercises. Arduino loans its name to a scope

5|Page
of programmable microcontroller sheets, which fill in as the brains of these DIY

gadgets. These sheets can be wired into temporary circuits, where they can

communicate with lights, sensors, engines, receivers, catches, and some other

segment you need to incorporate into your hand crafted machines. For example,

you could utilize an Arduino to assemble a movement controlled camcorder or to

remote control the lights in your parlor. Obviously, this equipment is no great

without an approach to control it. Luckily Arduino sheets are programmable from

a Linux, Macintosh or Windows machine, utilizing an incorporated advancement

condition (IDE), downloadable from here, or from the Arduino web proofreader.

Bluetooth Module

According Melanie (2018) the Bluetooth module automatically activates when the

Soundboks is on, and you should be able to connect instantly after the light

indication appears on the Soundboks. The Bluetooth module will only deactivate

if there's no incoming signal from any device for more than 2 minutes, in order to

save power. You'll need to activate Bluetooth on your device and connect with the

specific Soundboks unit, specified by the individual team-ID, on the top of your

Soundboks.

Lighting Control System

According Rodriguez N. (2013) a lighting control framework is a clever system of

lighting controls which enables you to have control of the lights in a space. There

are different kinds of lighting control frameworks accessible to you contingent

6|Page
upon your requirements and wants. An ordinary switch in your home that

switches a light on and off is a type of lighting control. Your garage surge lights

that turn on when it recognizes movement as somebody pulls up to your home is

likewise a type of lighting control. To completely comprehend what a lighting

control framework is, we have to comprehend the distinctive kinds of lighting

control frameworks are, and how they are not quite the same as straightforward

lighting controls.

Lighting Controls

According to M.R. Brambley et. Al. (2005) the simplest way to reduce the

amount of energy consumed by lighting systems is to turn lights off whenever

they are not required. Most people simply do not shut off lights when they leave

rooms. One solution to this problem is occupancy sensors, which sense the

presence of people in a space using infrared and/or ultrasonic motion sensors.

These switches are appropriate in spaces where people pass in and out often, such

as private offices, restrooms, storage areas, and conference rooms. Lighting

controls can also dim lights when there is plenty of daylight. Such systems can

save 20-60% of lighting energy. To respond appropriately as the distribution of

sunlight in the room changes through the day, these systems require brightness

sensors to be placed strategically in the room. Different sensors may actuate

different lighting zones. Occupancy sensors and brightness sensors can be

individual switches for individual lights or inputs to larger control systems. The

most highly-optimized lighting control systems combine multiple sensors and a

7|Page
logic processor to control lights. These systems can often save 40% of overall

lighting energy; sometimes even far more.

Related Studies

According to Rajesh Shrestha (2014), from this examination, presume that the

Arduino Uno with the Bluetooth module and transfer driver works extremely

well. It is anything but difficult to utilize in our home as a savvy home

computerization framework. It is exceptionally advantageous to the individual

who is physically incapacitate and furthermore utilized for matured individual for

controlling electrical machine remotely with the assistance of Android cell phone.

According to Everton Rafael da Silva and Breno Lisi Romano (2015), this

undertaking intended to plan a vehicle prototype worked with Arduino and

controlled with programming created on Android that can perform manual or

programmed ways. Up to this point investigate and breaking down the re-

enactment of tests appeared, it is trusted that it is doable to utilize the model

intended to subjective advancement, for future clients can figure out how to

embed custom ways that can procedure rationale issues and more unpredictable

arithmetic permitting the model play out the coveted developments.

Project Development

The Researchers have come with the idea to develop a lampshade that instead to

turn it on or off manually it can be done using Bluetooth. You only need to

connect the device through Bluetooth module of the lampshade and you can now

switch it on or off. However, the Bluetooth module must be parallel to the device

so that the infrared can transmit the signal.

12 | P a g e
The first thing the researchers do is to buy a Bluetooth module, Arduino, and A

Single Channel Relay. Then follow the diagram to connect the wires properly and

accordingly for the Device may function well. Also the researchers download the

drivers for GizDuino UNO version 5.0 and install the Arduino application. Then

the researchers programmed the GizDuino UNO in the computer using Sketch for

Arduino and java script codes. Lastly the researchers make some tests to see if the

codes works well. After that, we design the chassis, where we will put the

components and serves as the base. In additional, we connect the light bulb in the

relay to make it work and the researchers put the body of the lamp with the light

bulb attached on it at the top of the chassis.
