Lesson Name: Lesson 1- Writers select a topic and begin rehearsing.

Grade: 1st

Subject: Writing

Objectives: Students will select a topic for their how-to book.

Standards:

Materials:

- List of ideas

- Pencil

- Writing paper

- Mentor texts

Procedure:

- Introduction:

o I will start by talking about the connection between choosing a topic for their

small moment stories and the how to book.

o I will then give them an example of a how to book I could write.

- Exploration:

o Let’s review our list of How-To Book Ideas… (or have students look over

individual lists they started during immersion). Begin thinking about what book

you might make to teach others to do the thing you know how to do.

o Have students turn and talk and share possible How-To ideas they are thinking

about writing
o I will model how to rehearse the piece.

- Closure:

o Students will work independently on rehearsing their piece and create a video of

them saying their final product.

o I will review these videos asking them to add more detail and to see if the

rehearsal makes sense.


Lesson Name: Lesson 2- Plan books through sketching

Grade: 1st

Subject: Writing

Objectives: Students will sketch their ideas out.

Standards: 1.2/1.5

Materials:

- How to booklets

- Anchor chart

- Pencil

- Writing paper

Procedure:

- Introduction:

o Reviewing the list of their ideas, students will choose one to focus on.

o Now we need to picture how to do these steps

o I will model by touching the pages and sketching a few steps of my book

- Exploration:

o .Students will work with partners talking through their sketches

o They will tell them the steps one step at a time and sketch as they go

- Closure:

o If they have rehearsed their book more than once and are ready to write, next

session you will be able to write.

Grade: 1st

Subject: Writing l

Objectives: Students will write the steps of their how to book using the sketches as a reference.

Standards: W. 1.5

Materials:

- Pencil

- Writing paper

- Mentor texts

- Sketches

Procedure:

- Introduction:

o I will show the pages I sketched yesterday by pointing to each page saying the

steps out loud

o I will then start writing my materials, first step, second step, and so on.

o I will explain the importance of having very specific words, so the reader knows

exactly what to do. I will give 2 examples and have the students choose the one

that makes the book more direct.

- Exploration:

o Students will have time to write their how to books


o I will be going around looking at the language they are using to make sure it is

direct and assisting with the changes

- Closure:

o Students will re-read their work and think if the words are precise or if they can

change the words to make the book more direct.
