Objective: To study the transient response of RL series
circuit
Apparatus: CRO, Function generator,inductor,resistor,connecting
wires.

Source free RL circuit:

•A Circuit in which a resistor and a inductor are connected in series with the Voltage/Current
source it is called RL Series circuit.
•A source-free RL circuit occurs when its dc source is suddenly disconnected.
•The energy already stored in the inductor is released to the resistors.

•We can apply KVL around the loop above :

vL +vR =0
•By definition, vL =L di/dt and vR = Ri. Thus,

•This is First Order Differential Equation.

•we find the final expression by solving this

Wave forms of inductors:
Charging of a inductor:
The current response of the RL circuit.

I(t)=Vs/R(1-e-t/τ ¿

Discharging of a inductor:
The current response of the RL circuit.

I(t)=Vs/R(e-t/τ ¿
