Entry Activity/Hook
Good morning students! Please take a seat at one of the xylophones. Today we are going to learn
a little bit more about a song we already know the words to. Remember when we talked about
visiting a far away land? Where did you visit? What did you do?

Warmup
T: “Listen to me sing the song again.”
T: *Sings song*
T: “Now let’s do a call and respond! Finish my sentence!”
T/S: *Sing call and response. Switching the second time through.*
T: *continue to review the song aurally until students are able to sing the song again*
T: “Great, now let’s take a look at what this music looks like!”

Activity #1 Objective - By the end of this sequence, students will play the song ‘Round and
‘Round on an Orff xylophone or marimba with few or no mistakes.

Activity #1 Sequence -
T: Listen to me sing the song, can you find the pitch I start on using your xylophone?
S: *Students search for the D bar*
T: Great, now let's find the next pitch I sing. What note do I sing when I say the second “round”?
S: *Students discover its the E bar*
T: Wonderful! You see that I have sang the top two notes of the G Pentatonic scale (D and E).
Now take a look at the music. Each time I sing D or E, play with me.
S: *Play D or E*
T: Take a look at the rest of the song. Can you find G on your instrument?
S: *Take a look at the instrument and find G.*
T: Each time I sing G, play with me.
S: *Play G with me*
T: Great! Now there are only two notes we haven’t played. What are they?
S: A and B
T: Find those notes in the song and play them by yourself.
S: *Spend around 1 minute practicing and identifying A and B*
T: Now that you have identified all of the notes in the song, let's look at the music and read it. I
will sing the melody and you will pick two notes of the five to play. Play those notes when I sing
them. Ready?
S: *Play the song on xylophone using two notes.*
T: *Repeat this process until all five notes are incorporated and they are playing the entire piece*

Activity #2 Objective - By the end of this sequence, students will replicate and improvise G
Pentatonic melodies based on music from the West Indies.

Activity #2 Sequence -
T: “Let’s watch this video that shows a car driving to Villa West Indies. Why does that place
sound familiar? That’s where our song was from! Listen for unique sounds and tell me what you
think when we are done!”
T: *Show students the YouTube video*
T: “What did you notice about the music? What instruments did you hear? What did you see in
the video? Did you see a lot of water? How did their music sound different than what we usually
play? How does it sound similar?”
T: *use this time to explore aspects of WMP and theory topics*
T: One of the instruments that they used was a steel drum! We don’t have any of these in our
classroom, so we are going to use our xylophones to make that wonderful music. Listen to the
beat and making something up. Watch me!
T: *improvises along to the beat*
S: *improvise*
T: Watch me! *Improvise two measure* Bom, makaleli chee-cheem bom* Improvise two
measure* Bom, makaleli chee, cheem bom
T: Now you try making something up and I will sing.
S: *exchange improvisation with two measures of singing*
T: Now let’s switch. I’ll make something up then you sing!
S: *exchange improvisation with two measures of singing*
T: All together! Sing and make something up!
S: *improve and sing*

Wrap-Up
“Thank you students for learning about a new culture of music with me! It’s super important that
we remain respectful of others while honoring their music. Have a great day and see you
tomorrow!
