2. Opening prayer

Let us all remember that we are in the most Holy Presence of God.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Lord God,

You came to give honor to the least, those forgotten, overlooked and misjudged. You came to
give first place to the last, those left behind, misunderstood and undervalued. You came to give
a warm welcome to the lost, those who are orphaned, abandoned and destitute.

Help us to be your ears to listen to their cries.

Help us to be your voice speaking out love and acceptance.
Help us to be your feet walking beside those in need.
Help us to be your hands to clothe, feed and shelter them.

You came for the least, the lost and last of this world. Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.

Our Lasallian Prayer.

A 3-minute Read: CONCERNED FOR THE MARGINALIZED

St. John Baptist de La Salle was born into a world very different
from our own. He was the first son of wealthy parents living in
France over 300 years ago. Born at Reims, he received the tonsure
at age eleven and was named Canon of the Reims Cathedral at
sixteen.

Though he had to assume the administration of family affairs after

his parents died, he completed his theological studies and was
ordained a priest on April 9, 1678.Two years later he received a
doctorate in theology. Meanwhile, he became tentatively involved
with a group of rough and barely literate young men in order to
establish schools for poor boys.

At that time a few people lived in luxury, but most of the people were extremely poor: peasants
in the country, and slum dwellers in the towns.

Only, a few could send their children to school; most children had little hope for the future.
Moved by the plight of the poor who seemed so “far from salvation” either in this world or the
next, he determined to put his own talents and advanced education at the service of the children
“often left to themselves and badly brought up.”

To be more effective, he abandoned his family home, moved in with the teachers, renounced
his position as Canon and his wealth, and so formed the community that became known as the
Brothers of the Christian Schools.

HABIT 3: SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD

To be able to show your concern to the

marginalized sector of our society, you
need to understand their situation in
life, their struggles, and their way of
life. You need to know their challenges
and how they overcome them.
Sometimes wearing their shoes, you
would be able to understand their
different situations.

After understanding their way of life, you may share with them some experiences in your
life that you feel you are somewhat the same. You may also share that sometimes you
have to endure some painful experiences that test your faith in yourself, in others and in
God. The important thing is you both understand each other’s life experiences.
