also games such as EnjoyLearning World Map Puzzle 4 with a competition type of puzzle game where the puzzle
shaped like a part of a country and labeled the name of the country.
The development of smartphones is very fast because the usage of smartphones such as sending short messages, as
a tool to talk to each other, play games and various other features such as mobile phones in general like listening to
music, the internet, and so forth. Besides, the smartphone also seems to be made to be able to replace the function of
a computer in a smaller form so as to provide an advantage compared to the computer that can be grasped and easy
to carry anywhere. As one example is Android which is currently growing rapidly compared to other smartphones.
Android has advantages such as an operating system that is open (open source). Thus, easier for application developers
who want to create applications for Android and have the availability of quality applications. Due to its openness,
application developers are very enthusiastic to build quality applications and make things easier for others. Also, SDK
(Software Development Kit) for Android is free and can be downloaded by anyone and facilitate in marketing when
the application has been developed 5 .

2. Methodology

The development of the application is following Waterfall methodology 6 which consist of system requirement,
system design, implementation, and verification. System requirement is fulfilled by using questionnaires distributed
to 100 respondents and observing the similar game.
From questionnaires containing 19 questions and distributed to 100 respondents, male respondents were more than
female respondents, with a large percentage of male respondents was 66% and a significant proportion of women
respondents was 34%.
Based on the percentage of answers obtained from each choice of solutions can be concluded that more respondents
aged 18 to 21 years, with a rate of 48%. Respondents who work as students, with a percentage of 47%. Respondents
use Android smartphone with a rate of 61.54% followed by Blackberry operating system of 30.77% and iPhone of
3.08%.
Based on the percentage of answers obtained from each of the answer options, it can be concluded that respondents
are interested in using Android-based smartphone operating system, with a percentage of 95%. Respondents are
sometimes using a smartphone as an entertainment to play games, with a percentage of 56%. Respondents who play
games using a smartphone in one day for 1 to 3 hours, with a rate of 47% and respondents who like Puzzle game type,
with a percentage of 21.14% followed by strategy game 16.67% and action 13.82%.
Based on the percentage of answers obtained from each response option, it can be concluded that more respondents
chose Gameplay as the most critical component of a game, with a rate of 33.70%. Respondents who never played
games themed Indonesian culture, with a percentage of 87%. Respondents who know the types of games genre puzzle,
with a proportion of 67%.
Based on the percentage of answers obtained from each response option, it can be concluded that more respondents
who do not know the game puzzle of Indonesian cultural background on Android, with a percentage of 74%. Respon-
dents who want to play game puzzle with a cultural history of Indonesia, with a proportion of 90%, respondents who
want Bahasa Indonesia as the language used when playing a game themed Indonesian culture, with a percentage of
72%.
Based on the percentage of answers obtained from each of the answer options, it can be concluded that more
respondents chose to seek entertainment as the main reason to play a game, with a percentage of 41%. Respondents
who want bonus points to upgrade in-game assistance after successfully completing a mission from a match, with a
rate of 47%. Respondents chose too much time loading games as the shortcomings often encountered in playing a
game, with a percentage of 29%, respondents require instruction to play a game, with a rate of 87% and respondents
chose twisted ending as the expected ending of a match, with a percentage of 60%.
“Merah Putih” is a 2-dimensional game based on Indonesian culture. Game genres lead to various puzzle games
with cultural elements in every match. This game can be played on smartphone device with Android operating system.
By incorporating cultural elements, players are expected to get to know more about culture in Indonesia but in a way
that is more exciting and fun than having to read a book. Table 1 shows comparison to other games.
World Citizen Geography Quiz 2 is developed by Lammar Group. The game is a quiz game that aims to bring
knowledge about the geography of the world. The type of quiz presented in the match is in the form of matching the

players can search for the answers first regardless of the time required.
Enjoy Learning World Map Puzzle is developed by Digital Gene 4 . The game is a map game that aims to make
players recognize the world maps, including by knowing the location of a country on their respective continents.
The game is played by drag and drop items in the form of pieces of the map. Pieces of the map then placed in their
respective areas to create a whole map. There is a timer in the game so the player must finish the game as soon as
possible. But the game is monotonous due to repetitiveness thus does not motivate players to continue playing for
long.
Geo Challenge For Kids 3 is developed by Xing Inc. The game is targeted to the minors or children, but not rule
out on adults to play it, because the match can be played by anyone and the design is light and attractive so giving
some interest to play. The game is a freemium application that is a price to pay for enjoying mores features, but in
general this game is free to download, so the game can be enjoyed free of charge only when the player want to go to
next stage then there is a price that must be paid.
In “Merah Putih” game, the player will become an Indonesian citizens character who meets with a foreign citizen
named Robert who invites the player to accompany him around to the areas in Indonesia. Inside the game, players will
select existing stages by selecting areas on the map in Indonesia. A map is divided into ten areas that can be entered
by players. Each stage of the game will consist of three games where two games are varied and different sets for each

stage, and there is a quiz at the end of the game to hone the player’s ability to get to know the culture in Indonesia.
There is also a new hidden bonus game that will open when the player gets the perfect score for a particular stage.
When the player finishes running and plays a stage, then the player will get a reward in the form of objects where
the object can be seen in the collection of players and players can see information about the objects that have been
obtained and information about the province. Objects collected are usually common objects that come from areas in
Indonesia. Besides the player will also get a star per the value obtained after the player finished playing a stage. Stars
can be collected and later used to upgrade the game to assist players in completing the game.

The requirement presented a use case shown in figure 1, become the base for developing a game application on
the Android platform with the theme of Indonesia culture with the aim that the Indonesian people care to preserve
the popular Indonesian culture with its diversity. In this game, users will be given a map, and the user can choose the
region to be explored if it meets the requirements that have been determined. After selecting a predefined area then
the user will be given some small game like guess words, puzzle, matching word, arranging word, random word, and
others. If the user can complete the game, then the user will be given information about the area and the value that
later this value is useful to open other areas that are still locked with different difficulty levels in each region.

3. Result and Evaluation

The opening page, shown in figure 2, is the starting page when the game “Merah Putih” is executed. It will appear
animated with android logo image as the opening and followed by the main menu view of the match. There will
be three lists selected by the player where the menu is Permainan Baru to start the game from scratch, Lanjutkan
Permainan to continue the game from the last save game, and Keluar Permainan to exit the “Merah Putih” game.
On the Save Slot page (figure 3(a)), players will select one of the 2 data stores that are useful for saving the game.
When the player chooses Permainan Baru, then this page serves to delete the old game data and store new game
information in the selected storage. Whereas when the player wants Lanjutkan Permainan then this page works so
that player can select previously saved data and continue the last game from where the storage.
On the Sound Setting and Reset Data pages, a player will be given two options settings that can be selected by the
player. The first choice in the settings menu is Suara where players can turn off all sounds in this game by unchecking
the checkboxes on the right side of the word Suara. If the player wants to reboot all the sounds in the game, then
players need to check back the checkbox. The second option in the settings menu is Reset Data where if the player
chooses this option then all save data either in save slot 1 or save slot 2 which already saved player will be lost.
Arrange Word page is the display when letter arranges game runs, at the top, there is a hint, and the player must
guess by selecting the letter by letter in the middle to form a complete word, where the letter should be chosen columns

per column according to the provided key. Located on the top right screen is a button to repeat the stage and also the
button to exit the stage and also there is a player’s life Nyawa. On the right side, there is a help button that can be used
to support of life and time.
Matching Images, shown in figure 4(b) is a matching display of images which shows some images that should be
matched by the player. When the player successfully matches the image, then the pair of images will be lost. Located
on the top right screen is a button to repeat the stage and also the button to exit the stage and also there is a player’s
life Nyawa. On the right side, there is a help button that can be used to support of life and time.
The Guessing Word page is a word guess game view. At the top of the screen there is a hint of the word to be
guessed by the player and at the center of the screen are the letters that players use to guess the word according to the
instructions. When the player manages to guess the word in full, the word will be displayed in the given list. Located
on the top right screen is a button to repeat the stage and also the button to exit the stage and also there is a player’s
life. On the right side, there is a help button that can be used to support of life and time.
Puzzle page is a puzzle game view on this application. On the left side are given pieces of images that must be
composed of players. In the center, there is an image that has been made darker to help the player by placing pieces of
the picture. At the top right of the display is a button to repeat the stage and also the button to exit the stage and also
there is a player’s life. On the right side, there is a help button that can be used to support of life and time.

The Random Word page is a Random Word view. At the top of the center is given a statement that the player must
answer by compiling given letters randomly at the center of the screen. At the top right there is a button to repeat the
stage and also the button to exit the stage and also there is a player’s life. On the right side, there is a help button that
can be used used to support of life and time.
The Difference Find page is a Find a Difference game view. At the center of the screen, there are two identical
images, and there are also some differences in both pictures. At the top right of the display is a button to repeat the
stage and also the button to exit the stage and also there is a player’s life. On the right side, there is a help button that

The page when the player completes a stage will appear when the player completes a stage. Pop-ups appear in the
middle of the page, where there are some scores and stars that players get. There is also an advanced button to go back
to the stage selection page.
Game Over pages will appear when a player fails to complete a match will appear when the player fails to complete
a game. The game will fail when the player’s life has run out or the time has run out. Pop-ups appear in the middle
of the page showing the number of scores a player gets before failing to finish the game. There is also an advanced
button for players to move to the next page.

The following is an evaluation of “Merah Putih” game application to eight golden rules 8,9 . Strive for consistency
in designing game application “Merah Putih” is seen in GUI (Graphic User Interface) where switching from screen
to screen looks consistent and does not undergo many changes so as not to make a user feel confused in the use of
buttons and functions available. GUI (Graphic User Interface) in the game “Merah Putih” is dominated by red, white,
and blue. And fonts that are often used are ComicSans MS and Segoe UI. Cater to universal usability has shown in
the game “Merah Putih” buttons that exist using a design that is often used every day or global, so that makes new
players to play this game do not feel confused about the function of the existing button. Offer informative feedback
in the “Merah Putih” game is shown when each activity performed by the player will get informative feedback to
indicate that the request made by the player has been received by the system such as the use of vibration when the
player answers the false question, or there is a sound effect indicating the correct answer to the player. Besides, when
the player presses an object on the collection screen, it will display information from the purpose and the city of
origin of the object. Design dialogs to yield closure, are shown in the game when the closure state is marked with a
screen indicating that the player has completed a stage that provides the complete details, total stars, and collection of
objects gained by the player. In the game “Merah Putih” errors can be prevented by providing a simple handling such
as when the player wants to enter a stage that has not met the conditions will display a mistake message indicating
that the requirements to get into the stage have not been achieved. The player can quickly reverse the action as there
are buttons to undo the work and return to the previous screen display like the “Back” button on the collection display.
The player can take control of the game as there are buttons that support the player in controlling the course of the
game such as the use of “Exit” and “Repeat” button on the game screen and the player can adjust the sound where
the sound in the match can be “Turned on” and “Turned off” as desired by the player via the settings screen. Each
function and the design of the buttons do not vary much with each other making it easier for players to remember the
role of the core without burdening the players’ short-term memory.
The following is an evaluation of “Merah Putih” game application to five multimedia elements 10 , the uses text for
the entire game as well as in object information, dialogs between characters, as well as in games (values, questions,
answers, and times). In addition to the main menu, and the selection of data storage slots also use text. A sound is
used as background music (BGM) and sound effects (SFX). Background music is utilized in all parts of the app, and
sound effects are used on games such as when the player runs out of time and answers selection. Images are used for
some types of games such as puzzles, guess images, search images, exclude, and match pictures. It is also used for
help, drawing characters, and objects that are obtained in the storage cabinet objects. An animation is used when the
application is executed when the main menu is displayed, while the dialog between characters will be displayed, as

each game is played, and in the puzzle game where the puzzle pieces can be moved according to the player’s hand
movements. There is no video of the match.

4. Conclusion

Based on the results of the analysis, discussion and evaluation got the following conclusion, game application
“Merah Putih” add variety game puzzle game on the Android platform with Indonesia culture theme. “Merah Putih”
can provide information about the culture of a region in Indonesia to Android users through educational games.
