Tutorial 1
Chapter 02 Trigonometrical Levelling
1. In what situation reciprocal trigonometrically levelling is conducted? Derived a relation for
determining the reduced level of a tower when two instruments and target point are at different
vertical plane.
2. An instrument was set up at A and the angle of elevation to a vane 3.5m above the foot of the
staff held at B was 9030'. The horizontal distance between A and B was known to be 2500m.
Determine the R.L. pf the staff station B, given that the R.L. of the instrument axis was
655.750m. Also apply the correction for refraction and curvature.
3. To determine the elevation of the top of chimney, a theodolite was set up at P in an adjoining area
and the angle of the elevation was 30 030' at top of chimney. The reading on a staff held on BM
was 1.755m. the theodolite was transited and another point Q 200m away was fixed on the
ground surface. The angle of an elevation was 25020' measured at top of chimney. The staff
reading on the BM was again 1.755m. if the RL of BM was 580.375m, calculate the R.L of the
top of chimney.
4. The top (B) of the tower was sighted from two stations A and C at very different level, the
stations A and C being in line with top of tower. The angle of elevation from A to top of tower
was 36015' and that from C was 16 050'. The angle of elevation from C to vane 1m above the foot
of the staff held at A was 8 025'. The height of instrument A and C were 1.950m and 1.750m
respectively. The horizontal distance between A and C was 150m and R.L of the station C was
250.450m, find the R.L of the top of tower and horizontal distance from C to the tower.
5. The top (T) of tower is observed from two stations M and N, 50m apart such that angles TMN
and TNM are 600 and 500 respectively. The angles of elevations from M and N are 30 015' and 290
respectively. The readings on the staff held at BM of R.L. of 450.450m are 2.270m and 0.750m
from M and N respectively. Find the R.L. of top of Tower.
6. The top (T) of the tower was sighted from two stations at very different level and in the same
vertical plane with T. find R.L. of the top of tower from the following observed data:

Inst. Station H.I Target Zenithal Angle R.L

M 1.87m T 51040' -
N 1.64m T 68045' 675.850m
The distance between two stations M and N is 120m.The angle of elevation from N to 2m above
the root of the staff held at M was 15015'.
