2. STORM WATER SYSTEM

2.1 General Design Considerations

The design shall determine the most suitable strategy for collection and disposal of storm
water.
The design adopted two methods to collect and disposal of storm water during design
development in order to determine suitability and to determine the benefits and preference for
use of either system. The primary options include:
1 - Passive system Considers utilizing passive drainage elements such as trench soakaways,
this system is used to drain storm water collected from roof building.
2 - Positive discharge system Utilizing a positive collection system where runoff is directed
away from the road ways and parking area to a storm water network, final disposal of collected
storm water will be flow upon a proposed storm evaporation ponds.

2.2 Regulations and Codes & Standards

The following documents and guidance are referenced for information and will be considered
when developing the various surface water design works. This list is not considered exhaustive
and provides only the key elements for consideration:
Qatar Sewerage and Drainage Design Manual (ASHGHAL)
Volume 1 General
Volume 3 Surface Water Drainage
Volume 8 Developer Guidelines

2.3 Design Criteria

The following table summarizes the KEY criteria for development of the storm water design. ASHGHAL requirement
During design development, detailed reference to specific requirements will be provided in
accordance with those standards identified in the section above. The following Table represent
Storm Water Design Criteria.

2.4 External Interface From review of the data available, it is not anticipated that there will be any means of disposal

to any offsite network such as those operated by the Public Works Authority. The site slopes
from the middle zone outward to site corners, edges as per indicated on below figure (site
contour line)

Soakaway size for building will be represent individual depend on condition of each building.
- Roads, carparks and other hard standings will be drained using conventional
collection methods, gullies, Drainage network, catch pits etc. along with road kerbs.
And final disposal will be flow upon storm evaporation ponds.

2.6 Indicative Runoff Estimation

It is required to estimate the quantity of storm water calculate the amount of water resulting
from rainfall of different project areas and the characteristics of each area to estimate the
coefficient of excess rainfall and rainfall intensity, Based on the frequency curve for rainfall
intensities of the Doha city(IDF curve). Based on Rational Formula the flow quantities will be
determined as follow:
Q rain = 0.278 C × I × A
Where:
Q rain = the amount of storm water that reaches to the drainage system m3/s
C = coefficient of excess rainwater, depends on the type of surface on which
conducted by storm water as mentioned on section 1.3 (design criteria)
I = intensity of the fall of the expected rainfall in the region (mm/h) extract from
2.5 Internal Interface IDF curve (Design manual QT00129 Vol 3)
As per illustrate on section 1.1 Storm water will be collected from the roof building to drain into A = area served by the line (Catchment) (km2)
proposed soakaway. Soakaway size depend on amount of flow required to drain.
2.14| P a g e

2.8 Pipe Design

Use Manning eq. to design pipe diameter and slope as follow;

Where:
V = velocity m/sec.
n = Manning's roughness coefficient, (n=0.013)
R = Hydraulic radius, (m)
S = slope, (m/m)
Storm networks will be analysis by using Bentley StormCad program (connect edition).

2.9 Project Description

As per approved schematic design Positive discharge system will be used to collect drain water
effect on site road, paved area where runoff is directed away to catch basin or trench drain
located on low point of site levels which connect with a storm water network, final disposal of
collected storm water will be flow upon a proposed storm evaporation ponds.
- Road level design has been taken into consideration during storm drainage network

The flow pipe velocity shall be at least 0.75 m/sec. to avoid sand precipitation. Minimum slope
identify depends on conveying flow and minimum allowed velocity. The following table
specifies the minimum slope depends on pipe diameter to achieve of self-clean velocity.
However on the upstream pipes may be get a velocity less than allowable due to low flow, to
verify self-clean velocity the pipe slop shall be increase which leads to increase the pipe depth,

minimize cost and pipes flushing shall be carry out by maintenance operator responsible
