What is a Mechanism? A mechanism is mechanical portion of a machine that has the function of
transferring motion and forces from a power source to an output.

Generally used to:

Change the Change the

direction of type of
movement movement

Change the Change the

speed of amount of
movement torque
What is the difference between a
mechanism and a structure?
1. The parts of a mechanism move relative to one another,
Frame = Structure whereas the members of a structure do not move relative to
one another.

2. A mechanism transforms the available energy into some

useful work, whereas in a structure no energy is transformed
into useful work.

3. The links of a mechanism may transmit both power and

Chain and Sprocket = Mechanism
motion, while the members of a structure transmit forces only.
There are four main
types of motion Linear motion Oscillating Motion

Reciprocating Motion Rotary Motion

1- links
Binary link

Ternary link

Quaternary link
2- joints
Hinged joints
The parts of mechanism are
connected together using
different methods:
Sliding joints

Rolling joints
Classification of joints

1. Binary joint

2. Ternary joint

3. Quaternary joint
