Visit to a retail store

 Founded by Michel Leclercq in 1976, Decathlon started with a store in


Lille, France. Decathlon Group markets its products under more than 20
brands. Its research and development facilities are located across
France, where the company develops its product designs, registering up
to 40 patents per year.
 Decathlon already has nearly 700 stores worldwide and innovating to
make sport accessible to everyone.
 Sales from trucks in cities where there are no stationary stores.

When I visited the store decathlon of Mall of India in 3rd floor at 15.25 p.m. I
observe following points:-

Body language and gestures of sales staff


A retail business is mostly dependent on customers make sure that they feel
valued as soon as they enter your premises.
 Smile - when I enter the store some staffs greet me with a smile on their
face.
 Eye Contact – And I had a pleasing eye contact with the staff which
made me feel welcome to the store.
 Scratching head - I observe few staff were scratching their head while
attending me and its look like they had less knowledge about the brand.
 Walking Towards Customers - I went to the store and some sales staff
interestingly walking towards me intentionally to know whether I need
their assistance or not.
 Folded and Opened Arms - Some sales staff were look interested and
energetic as their arms were opened and relaxed but some staff were
not interested as they folded their arms across the chest.

Dress code of both types of employees


 Decathlon have casual outfit for both male and female sales staff.
 Male – Half T-shirt with blue uniform
 Female – Half T-shirt with blue uniform
Appearance of male/ female executive

Height – The male staff in between 5’5 to 5’10.


The female staff in between 5’ to 5’4
Weight – Male staff were of average weight but some exception was there.
Female staff were of also average weight between 50-65kg.

Hairstyle of Staff

 Both male and female staffs have their own choice of hairstyle but
female staffs are not supposed to have open hair.
 They have to tie their hairs.

Tattoo and Cosmetic


 Male Staff – They doesn’t carry any grooming or cosmetic product.
 Female Staff – They carry their basic cosmetic items but they don’t
supposed to do heavy makeup at the time of work.

Observe their way of dealing with the customers

 Stay Calm- Some staff member were very calm and their calming
approach will help me stay calm too which also makes me feel if any
situation arises they can help me to solve my problem and reach the
solution.
 Listen to Customers – they listen my query in a very polite way and they
were also carefully listening other customers.
 Be Available – after entering in the store, no matter how much rush in
the store they always attend you like you are the first one.
 Reasons for such gestures and expectations

 The employees/sales staff try to greet and attract the customers by their
gesture because they want to maintain a good relationship with them as
customer are valuable assets for every retailer as they help them
generate revenue/profit. So it is necessary for a sales staff to understand
and satisfy the need of the customer.
