Converting a V4 Mechanism to a V5 Mechanism

This procedure shows how to convert a CATIA V4 kinematic model to a V5 mechanism.

Enter the Device Building workbench. For more information, please refer to Entering the Workbench.

If you work with the cache system, please make sure you are in Design Mode (select Edit >
Representations > Design Mode). For more detailed information, please refer to the Infrastructure
User's Guide.

1. Use the Insert > Existing Component command to load all the model files that begin with the
string KIN_EX17*. These files are located in the Samples directory.
2. Open the model containing the kinematics mechanism. The model containing the V4
mechanism should represent a "stick figure", i.e., wireframe data plus the definition of the
mechanism itself.
3. In the specification tree, select the V4 mechanism to be converted. In our example, expand
KIN_EX_00_F1_ACTIVE and select LANDING GEAR.

You can also use the drag and drop capability.

4. Copy the data you have selected to the clipboard. To do this, either click Copy, select Edit >
Copy command, or select the Copy command in the contextual menu (shown in the illustration
below).

5. Select the Application node in the specification tree.

6. Recover the data previously put in the clipboard. To do this, either click Paste, select the Edit
> Paste command, or select the Paste command in the contextual menu.

Click Fit All In icon to fit all data in the window.

The dressup is maintained when you perform a copy/paste within the same document
as is the case here.
7. Notice that the toolbars change depending on whether a Version 4 model or a Version 5
Product Document is selected. The result should look something like this:

In some cases, the conversion is impossible. For example, if the model contains isolated
solids, they are converted to .cgr files. If you need to visualize them, select Insert >
Existing Component from the menu bar.

The conversion process at the element level

The following table specifies how the various elements in a V4 kinematic model are converted to
their V5 counterparts.
V4 Data Type V5 Element Type
Model Product
Set Sub-product + associated part, Geometry contained in the set
V4 Mechanism V5 Mechanism
V4 Joint V5 Joint
V4 Command V5 Command
V4 Fixed Part V5 Fixed Part
