A Brief on Segregation and Composting

Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste
together currently make up more than 28 percent of what we throw away, and should be composted
instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release
methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Management of Garbage or food waste is the most important issue affecting the Environment and an
awareness on SEGGREGATION & COMPOSTING AT HOME level is mandatory.

Segregation of our waste is essential as the amount of waste being generated today caused immense
problem. There are certain items are not Bio Degradable but can be reused or recycled in fact it is
believed that a larger portion of the waste can be recycled, a part of can be converted to compost, and
only a smaller portion of it is real waste that has no use and has to be discarded.

Household waste should be separated daily into different dustbins for the different categories of waste
such as Wet & Dry Waste which should be disposed of separately.

Wet wastes, which consist of leftover foodstuff, vegetables, peels etc. should be put in a organic waste
converter -My Green Bin and compost can be used as manure in the garden. Dry waste consisting of
cans, aluminum foils, plastics, metal, glass and paper could be recycled.

Segregation of Waste: Waste Can be segregated as

Bio Degradable Waste: Bio Degradable waste includes organic waste, e.g. kitchen waste, vegetables,
fruits, flowers, leaves from the garden and paper.

Non Bio Degradable Waste: Non-Biodegradables can be further segregated into Recyclable Waste,
Toxic Waste & Soiled Waste.

What to Compost What not to Compost

Benefits of Composting

• Enriches soil, helping retain moisture and suppress plant diseases and pests.
• Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
• Encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter to
create humus, a rich nutrient-filled material.
• Reduces methane emissions from landfills and lowers your carbon footprint

THE COMPOST PRODUCED USING FUNGAL microbes are an asset to the farmer and hundreds of
hectares of barren land can be rejuvenated by applying compost produced in the Wet waste
management. This will provide a healthy farming, devoid of pesticides and REDUCE CANCER
AND MANY OTHER LIFE STYLE DISEASES produced by the food using chemical pesticides.

The Benefits of using Compost/Manure

• Enhances the Soil. Nutrient and energy cycling is increased and the retentive abilities of the soil
for nutrients and water are enhanced. Use of compost play an important role in soil erosion control,
soil biodiversity is increased, and nutrient losses are reduced, helping to maintain and enhance soil
productivity.
• Increases Water Retention. In many agriculture areas, pollution of groundwater courses with
synthetic fertilizers and pesticides is a major problem. As the use of these is prohibited in organic
agriculture, they are replaced by organic fertilizers (e.g. compost, animal manure, green manure)
and through the use of greater biodiversity (in terms of species cultivated and permanent
vegetation), enhancing soil structure and water infiltration. Well managed organic systems with
better nutrient retentive abilities, greatly reduce the risk of groundwater pollution. In some areas
where pollution is a real problem, conversion to organic agriculture is highly encouraged as a
restorative measure (e.g. by the Governments of France and Germany).
• Air and climate change. Organic agriculture reduces non-renewable energy use by decreasing
agrochemical needs (these require high quantities of fossil fuel to be produced). Organic
agriculture contributes to mitigating the greenhouse effect and global warming through its ability to
sequester carbon in the soil.
• Biodiversity. Organic farmers are both custodians and users of biodiversity at all levels. At the
ecosystem level, the maintenance of natural areas within and around organic fields and absence of
chemical inputs create suitable habitats for wildlife.

Benefits of Onsite Composting

• Reduce garbage at SOURCE, Odour free & No Sludge

• Shifting charges reduced drastically i.e Transportation of waste from houses to waste land is
reduced.
• Prevent landfills & pollution. This Waste Management avoids landfill by reducing carbon
footprint preventing secretion of obnoxious gases.
• Less labour involved and hence can be utilized for other potential purposes.
• Energy Efficient as Zero Electrical or Mechanical Energy input is needed that makes our
system Carbon & Water Foot Print Neutral.
• Renewable Energy as the waste decomposed are converted into the by-products generated are
Bio Booster (Organic Liquid Fertilizer) & Manure (Organic Fertilizer).
• No major Civil work required.

Benefit of using Fungal Innoculum (Microbes)

• FungaI Innoculum performs important services related to water dynamics, nutrient cycling, and
disease suppression.
• They are important as decomposers in the soil food web.
• They convert hard-to-digest organic material into forms that other organisms can use.
• They physically bind soil particles together, creating stable aggregates that help increase water
infiltration and soil water holding capacity.
• The Fungal Innoculum decomposes the waste aerobically into high nutrient organic planting
media and manure.
• The advantage is that no churning or rotation process is involved.

Aerobic Process inside the Digestor

• Microbes will start forming as Mycelium, a Fungus that starts producing Enzymes. Mycelium will
start growing in 5 days inside our bins and the breaking down will happen subsequently. After 5th
day the reduction process will be very fast as the microbes starts mutiplying.
• Major component of the waste is Carbohydrate, Fat and Protein. It will get broken into smaller
particles of Sugar, Amino Acids, Fatty Acids or Glycerol. This will be Absorbed by Mycelium as
Food.
• In this process, Nitrogen will be converted into Nitrogen Oxide because it is completely Oxidized.
No Methane or any other Obnoxious gases are produced in an oxidizing environment. That is
why our bins are fitted with Aerators.
• Ammonia, Hydrogen Sulphide, etc are Obnoxious gases that will stink. The Carbon Dioxide,
Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide produced doesn’t stink in MYGREENBINS, as they are
converted as Oxides that helps in preventing bad odour from the wet waste.
• Leachet is used as a “Folio Spray” and should not be applied to the roots as it will immediately
get absorbed.
• Mycelium keeps attacking the Organic Wet Waste and is seen spread on the top layer, brown in
colour.

Byproducts from the composting process

The liquid & solid manure produced from composting has proved a boon to our farmers across all types
of crop cultivation and has drastically reduced the usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

The liquid compost acts as the best organic bio booster & insecticide and the solid manure a full-fledged
organic fertilizer thereby eliminating large incidents of cancer and other health hazards.

Rejuvenating Organic cultivation among farmers

Organic agriculture is a unique production management system which promotes and enhances agro-
ecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity, and this is
accomplished by using on-farm agronomic, biological and mechanical methods in exclusion of all
synthetic off-farm inputs.

Chilli, Wheat, Strawberry& Mango Farms using My Green Bin compost and compost tea in Wai Satara.
MAHARASHTRA.

Mr. Sathish Gawde the farmer cultivated Strawberry in large scale in Mahabaleswar, Maharashtra only
using My Green Bin manure and compost tea also helping other producers by supporting and supplying
our manure collected from Mumbai RWA’s on weekly basis.

A farmer owing 400 acres of land did onion farming with our compost tea.

Instructions to use the Mygreenbin

The composting process will be done with Dual digestors. 30 days for the digestor to get filled and the
next 30 days for the composting process to get completed.
• Spread 1 cm layer of My Green Microbes at the bottom of the composter. Vegetable peels & Fruit
waste has to be chopped to small pieces and added to the Composter for upto 3” height. If the waste
are added as big chunks the Microbes will not act at its full strength and maggots may be generated.
• The leftover food in the plastic bags should not be thrown directly into the composter. Only the
leftover food has to be added & the plastic bag has to be removed compulsorily.
• Do not add any liquid items in the composter.
• The dry leaves from the garden can be added only after adding microbes above the waste.
• Spread ½ cm of microbes above the waste, necessary to cover the waste totally.

• Now again add 3” of waste and add ½ cm of microbes regularly till the composter is filled (approx. 25-
30 days).
• Once you start using the My Green composter, every two days the liquid stored in the lower chamber
should be removed and discarded, till the liquid turns into dark leachate and this leachate or Bio
booster can be stored and used as organic fertilizer.
• The bio composter is designed to collect Bio booster separately. This can be diluted with water @
1:10 ratio and sprayed on to plants acts as bio booster and pest repellent.
• Once the first composter is full, it has to be closed & kept undisturbed for 15 days. After 15 days the
compost can be used to nourish the soil also it can be used as Planting Media. The rich organic
manure can be used as potting soil instead of conventional soil and you can cultivate your own
organic vegetables.
• Repeat the above process in the second MY GREEN COMPOSTER. By the time second composter
is full, the first composter will be empty.
• It is advisable to have one person who will be in charge of the My Green Composter operations.

Let’s Segregate the waste, Compost It and Save the environment.
