Summative B (Diseases & Immunity)

You are the lead scientist for a pharmaceutical company. Your company is in charge of
developing a new brand of Vitamin C supplements following the outbreak of the COVID-19.
However, the most common observation made in the past studies on the existing commercial
tablets is that by the time the tablets reach the end-users, the vitamin C content has already
depleted by almost half.

Your colleague, Mr Potter, suggested that the potential culprit for this drastic drop could be the
storing temperature in the stores and the warehouses where the temperature could rise up to
45oC on very hot days.

You are to plan an experiment to determine the effect of temperature on the vitamin C content
of one of the sample tablets (shown above). This tablet was recently formulated in your
company’s laboratory and you are to come up with a planned experiment to determine the
validity of the statement from Mr Potter.

1. Write a suitable background information on this investigation and how it is

relevant to the topic ‘Diseases & Immunity’.
[550 - 650 words including at least 3 citations / pictures need to be cited too].

2. Description of problem to be tested or question to be tested and how is it

relevant to solve a certain problem. “How does….affect…. OR the relationship
between …. and …..”

3. Outline and explain a testable hypothesis using correct scientific

reasoning.
4. Describe why you made your prediction by citing or pointing to evidence
you found for Step 3.

5. To help you in your investigation, Mr Potter is also doing another research

study on the vitamin C content in various vegetables. He is using these
apparatus and procedures in his research. You may adapt some of his
methodology to yours.

Step 1: 25 cm3 of vegetable juice was extracted and added to a conical flask.
Step 2: 1 cm3 of starch was added to the conical and was mixed well using a glass
rod
Step 3: A 10cm3 syringe was filled with iodine solution.
Step 4: One drop of the iodine solution was then added to the conical flask and
mixed for 5 seconds using the glass rod.
Step 5: Step 4 was repeated, adding one drop at a time, until the solution in the
conical flask remained blue-black.
Step 6: The volume of the remaining iodine in the syringe was noted.
6. Identification of variables in your own investigation on the Vit C tablet.

Independent variable

Variable How and why is it varied? State the sets

used and the unit of measurement

Dependent variable

Variable How to measure and the unit of

measurement?

Controlled variables (at least 3)

Variable Why do we keep it the same?

1.

2.

3.

4.

7. List down all the materials and equipment you will need to carry out this
experiment.

8. Your experimental setup

[A drawing should be available for this part and labelled appropriately - You can
draw it on a piece of paper and attach the photo here]

9. Describe all the procedures / steps when carrying out this investigation.
Remember:
- The steps should allow you to collect reliable and fair results to draw a
correlation between the variables.

1)

10. Describe at least 2 safety precautions that you took to carry out the
experiment (This is important if someone were to carry out the same
experiment)

11. Illustrate what variables you would measure and what data you would
collect during the experiment in the table of data below. (Everything
highlighted in grey needs to be erased and filled up appropriately)
