An annealed-steel tensile specimen (E = 30X10 psi) has a 0.505-in minimum diameter and a 2 in-gage Length.
Maximum load is reached at 15,000 lb, and fracture occurs at 10,000 lb.
a) What is the tensile strength?
The tensile strength, often known as Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) is the maximum stress that a material can withstand
while being pulled before breaking.
Data:
• D = 0.505 in → r = 0.2525 in
• Fmax = 15000 lb

b) Why does fracture occur at a lower load than maximum load?

When a bar is under tension, two opposing mechanisms take place:
1) The bar loses cross-sectional area since it attempts to retain its volume while being stretched (Poisson’s ratio effect).
Once the bar begins to suffer plastic deformations, it undergoes stress hardening and it’s elastic modulus rises.
2) As the increase in elastic modulus is greater than the loss of area, the stress (force) measured will increase. At a certain
point, however, the material starts to lose area (necking) faster than it hardens, which means that the force required to continue
deforming the element starts to diminish, until the element reaches its ultimate deformation capacity and snaps.
Therefore the fracture occur at a lower load than maximum load.

c) What is the deformation when a tensile stress of 15,000 psi is applied?

• L0 = 300 m
• ∆L = 3 cm = 0.03 m
• F = 200 N
• D = 5 mm = 0.005 m → r = 0.0025 m
