THE EGG CHAIR

Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, The Egg was commissioned for the SAS Royal Hotel in
Copenhagen’s lobby. It was a chair made of organic and soft design elements in a curvaceous
form, deemed unusual for its time and intended to contrast against the harsh-lined, metallic
modernist exterior. The chair, in cohesion with the rest of the interior of the hotel lobby,
diverged from the typical construction, design concepts and materials typically used by
designers throughout the 1950’s.

The Egg is an elliptical shaped, foam padded, upholstered chair which imitates a cocoon or
egg like shape around the user because of its gradually inward curving format. Their finish
has a smooth and taut surface, which covers the seat seamlessly, further emulating the egg
like aspects. Fabric version of the chair have 500-hand-sewn stiches and the premium leather
version 1,100. These stitches bind together the only two hides used to make a single chair,
leaving the chair with no seams or joins. This sits above a metallic, 4-point star shaped swivel
base allowing the chair to rotate.
