Problem analysis

In the framework of the training module titled, “Language Acquisition for the Wine

Enthusiast,” the main objective is for wine enthusiasts to learn more about Monterey County

wine, while learning key phrases in French (related to wine). The reasoning behind this training,

and why it is so imperative to engage learners in Monterey County wine is because wineries have

been negatively impacted from the 2020 wildfires and the shutdowns due to Covid-19.

Businesses are staggering and many wineries are struggling financially. It is estimated that

California grape growers will lose $437 million between March 2020 and March 2021

(California Association of Winegrape Growers, 2020). In Monterey County, the estimated loss

for COVID-19-related decrease in business is an estimated $267 million dollars (Monterey

County Vintners and Growers Association, 2020).

There needs to be consistency in employee knowledge about Monterey County wine who

work in wineries. There also needs to be consistent interest in wine from consumers. Wineries

need more revenue streams.

Due to an increase in lay-offs of winery employees, many former employees are now

either still on unemployment, or have sought out other jobs. The pool of potential employees has

changed, and there is a heavy turnover of winery employees compared to pre-Covid era. Due to

shutdowns, many employees keep getting their hours reduced or cut back, so there is not

consistent employees at one particular winery. It is expensive to train new employees, so an

effective training module is necessary. An online training program is inexpensive and can reach

a wider amount of learners quicker than an in-person training.

Target audience

The target audience is wine enthusiasts. The primary audience is industry-wine

enthusiasts (industry learners). These are people who work in tasting rooms. The secondary

target audience are consumer-wine enthusiast (consumer learners), who are customers, wine club

members, and anyone interested in learning more about wine. The consumer learners are

working professionals, outside of wineries, and have at least some college experience. The

majority have bachelor’s degrees, so they are used to the scholastic atmosphere and learning in

an academic environment. The industry learners are either scraping by working part-time and

collecting some unemployment benefits or are working full-time but on a skeleton crew. These

individuals who are working part-time could potentially use free time to advance their

knowledge in wine (or a completely different field).

Learning objectives

Five learning objectives that will be relevant in this learning module are as follows:

1) From memory, wine enthusiasts will be able to name 2 main varietals of wine

that grow in Monterey County with 80% accuracy.

2) From memory, wine enthusiasts will be able to describe the climate of Monterey

County and how it relates to grape production, with 80% accuracy.

3) Given a topographical map of Monterey County’s wine region, wine enthusiasts

will locate at least two AVAs (American Viticulture Areas) with 80% accuracy.
4

4) From memory, wine enthusiasts will be able to identify up to two wine vocabulary

words in French, with 80% accuracy.

5) From memory, wine enthusiasts will be able to pronounce one wine phrase in

French. Their pronunciations will be consistent with the standards given in the

pronunciation key.

Assessment

After learners have completed the module, they will be directed to take a quiz. This quiz

will be a combination of true/false, multiple-choice and fill in the blank questions to assess their

knowledge of the geography and topography of Monterey County Wine. There will also be an

audio quiz question(s) to assess their linguistic ability on how to pronounce a French word

and/or phrase pertaining to wine.

Instructional strategies

This 10–15-minute introductory module will consist of a 1-minute introduction, 6 minute lesson

on topography/geography of Monterey County, 3 minute lesson on a French word or phrase, and a 5

question quiz at the end. (Quiz can take 5 minutes or so to complete).

This training will be an online, self-study, asynchronous course. This format enables the busy,

professional adult learners to participate in this training at their own pace, when time allows. This format

will also be able to reach more audience members, and potentially increase awareness of Monterey

County wine region. This in turn, will increase revenue for local wineries.

This online training will be a series of instructional videos and audio files. The videos will

periodically have an instructor (or pedagogical agent) on the screen, who will guide the learners through

online lectures. This instructor/agent, along with other recorded audio files will also teach the

French words and phrases.

I plan to use my computer installed with Camtasia to edit the module and then integrate

with H5P to develop this module. The learners will need a computer and internet.
