Dear Hiring Manager,

I recently conducted an informational interview with Kevin Cavanaugh, Retirement Consulting

Actuarial Analyst at Mercer, and he recommended that I apply as a Mercer Marketplace Actuarial
Intern. I am pursuing this internship because it would give me the opportunity to leverage my
strong analytical and communication skills while improving the health, wealth, and performance
of employees around the world.

I am currently a sophomore in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of

Massachusetts-Amherst pursuing a B.B.A. in Finance, a B.S. in Mathematics, and a minor in
Economics. With concentrations in Risk Management and Actuarial Science, I have developed a
well-rounded foundation in business analytics that equips me with great insight for consulting
purposes. I am also a member of the Commonwealth Honors College and hold a 3.96 GPA
despite my rigorous degree programs. Through my coursework, I have had numerous
opportunities to construct, analyze, and forecast financial statements on Excel. The skills I have
gained from these experiences would be highly applicable in evaluating health care claims and
carrier utilization data for senior consultants.

I have also taken multiple steps over the years to meet the increasing emphasis on soft skills and
information flow in the business environment. As a Vivint sales representative this past summer,
I maintained excellent communication with my managers while working closely with prospective
customers in order to provide the best possible recommendations for their unique interests and
needs. Since then, I have assumed leadership roles in the UMass Actuary Club and Gamma Iota
Sigma to advance the university’s actuarial science program. On a daily basis, I am in constant
communication with other officers regarding the delegation of tasks, reaching out to industry
professionals, and preparing written reports or PowerPoint presentations. I believe that my ability
to accurately and effectively communicate information under these demanding circumstances
would help Mercer maintain organization, ensure reliability, and build client relationships.

I would like to thank you in advance for your time and consideration in reviewing my application.
I welcome the opportunity to interview with you at your earliest convenience and have attached a
copy of my resume for your reference. Please feel free to contact me at dcwu@umass.edu or
(201) 956-5464.

Sincerely,

Daniel Wu
