Lesson plan for March 18th, 2021

Grade: Grade 10-1 Social Studies Lesson Title: Impacts of Imperialism


Lesson Duration: 90 minutes
Overview of lesson
In this lesson, students will explore India and China to study the global impact of New Imperialism. After
students have explored these two cases studies, we will conduct a whole class review on the topic of Broad
Global Impacts of New Imperialism

globalization on Indigenous and non- globalization, and imperialism on Aboriginal societies

and imperialism

Canada)

Lesson Procedures
Introduction (5 minutes)
We will begin class with a quick review of New Imperialism to get the students thinking about certain concepts
before they dive into the case studies. I will begin by asking students what they remember from the previous
lectures. I will be writing student’s answers on the board as we go through the review—sample questions to
guide the discussion.
 What is the motive driving conquest?
o What were they looking for? / What did they need?
 What are some technologies that helped in the conquest of one nation over the other?
 Can someone remind me of the concept we talked about that Europeans used to justify their actions in
the colonies?
o What is it called?
o What does it mean?
Body (75 minutes)
“New” Imperialism Case Study: China handout (20 minutes)
 I will define and write down the term students might not be familiar While students are working on
with to aid with reading comprehension their handouts, I will be circling

 Students will read through the assigned work with the 2-3max people
to come up with three questions. One Sheet of paper per student. (20
minutes) While students are working on

 Grab laptops and login into their account to be able to access the
coggle activity.
Coggle Discussion (13 minutes)
Students will compare and contrast the experience and legacies that New
Imperialism had on Africa, India, and China.
 I will teach the students how to use the website (1-2 minutes)
 Students will write down their thoughts on the website, and as they
pop up, we will discuss them as a class.
Closure (5 minutes)

Five minutes before class is over, I will ask students to wipe down their laptops and put them away, and
disinfect their desks.
