Abstract
This study aims to investigate consumers’ brand loyalty toward sportswear products from a self-congruity
perspective. Data were gathered via a survey distributed online in Indonesia. The structural equation
modeling (SEM) method was used to test the hypotheses. The SEM results indicate a significant
influence of brand self-congruity on consumers’ brand association and perceived quality, attitudinal brand
loyalty, and behavioral brand loyalty. However, the study demonstrates that attitudinal brand loyalty does
not represent behavioral brand loyalty. This study contributes to the growing body of research on the self-
congruity perspective on brand loyalty. The study empirically confirms the indirect effect of brand self-
congruity on brand loyalty via the mediation effects of brand association and perceived quality in the
context of the ever-growing Indonesian sportswear market.
Introduction
Brand loyalty has long been considered a standard of success for a brand because such loyalty contributes
to both long-term sales and profit. Research into brand loyalty has been essential for many industries to
enhance decision making for investment purposes and to understand market and consumer behavior in
specific areas. Sportswear products are known for mass production and fast global dissemination through
imports and exports. The improving access to various consumer channels enhanced by globalization has
made it possible for sportswear producers around the world to boost sales and profits, making it
extremely important for businesses in the industry to fully understand the consumer they are trying to
attract and to retain existing loyal customers.
The demand for sportswear products in the Indonesian domestic market — which has generally been
overlooked by both local and foreign sportswear manufacturers, especially in the high-end segment —
has continued to strengthen in recent years. “With the growing number of middle-class consumers in the
country, sport has become part of Indonesians’ everyday lives. This has created demand for various
sportswear products and has enabled the sector to post a 9% value growth in 2017” (Global Business
Guide Indonesia 2017). In addition, the Indonesian government has designated the apparel and footwear
industry as a priority sector as these companies “employ nearly 3.5 million people and accounted for
almost 15% of the total workforce in the manufacturing sector” (Indonesia Sportswear Industry | GBG
2017).

Vision 2025: Education Excellence and Management of Innovations through Sustainable Economic Competitive Advantage
The sportswear industry in Indonesia is developing hand in hand with the growing athleisure and healthy
lifestyle trends. While these trends previously only targeted millennials, they now also target the X and Z
generations. Athleisure is also attracting older generations due to its combination of comfort and fashion
function. In addition, children’s membership in gyms has grown swiftly in recent years. The result is a
future teenage and young adult community that highly appreciates sports activities being implanted in
their daily lives. Also, various sports activities are becoming more popular, along with sports events and
sports communities.
With the aim of accommodating this increasing demand for fashionable and trendy sportswear, related
firms have launched innovative product variances. For example, some sportswear firms have
implemented sophisticated technologies such as insulators, microfibers, and nano-technology (Global
Sportswear Market Insights, Forecast to 2025 - Valuates Reports 2019).
While previously sportswear producers only targeted athletes and sportspersons, sports apparel today is
also popular with consumers who are interested in sports and adventurous activities. The application
segment is divided into amateur sport and professional athletic. The amateur sport sub-segment is
expected to hold the largest portion of the market by 2025 (Global Sportswear Market Insights, Forecast
to 2025 - Valuates Reports 2019).
The sportswear industry is generally acknowledged as one of the leading markets in the world. The
market leaders are Nike and Adidas, both of which produce variations in sports equipment via enhanced
creativity (Pride & Ferrel 2007). Also, Indonesia can be considered a sport-loving country, as evidenced
by its high involvement in and appreciation of sports events such as the Asian Games, which were held in
Indonesia in 2018.
The consumer behavior surrounding sportswear in Asia is mostly influenced by social, cultural, personal,
and psychological factors (Kotler et al. 2009). In terms of personal factors, one of the most essential is to
attract consumers through congruency between brand image and consumers’ self-image. Previous
research has demonstrated the essentials of congruency toward consumers’ self-image and the product or
brand in a typical user image (Sirgy et al. 2008).
Earlier studies have argued that consumers’ reactions toward a brand (e.g., brand evaluation and attitude,
pre-purchase intention and brand choice, post-consumption behaviors such as satisfaction and loyalty) are
significantly influenced by brand self-congruency (Kressmann et al. 2006). Hence, with the aim of
understanding the importance and potential influence of self-congruity theory in the Indonesian
sportswear market, this study analyzes its effects on Indonesian consumers’ brand loyalty dimensions.
Customers generally hold positive attitudes and purchase intentions toward brands that are congruent with
their self-image. Many studies in the marketing literature have argued the positive effect of image
congruence on consumer behavior (Sirgy et al. 2008). Specifically, various studies have argued that
consumers’ brand loyalty is influenced by brand-user image congruency both directly and indirectly
(Kressmann et al. 2006; Sirgy et al. 2008). Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relevant relationships
of brand self-congruency on brand loyalty dimensions.

Literature Review
Brand Association
Rio et al. (2001) define brand association as a customer’s knowledge regarding a brand; it reflects overall
brand equity in the customer’s mind. Meanwhile, other researchers have defined brand association as “the
meaning of the brand for consumers” (Pappu et al. 2005, p. x). Accordingly, two prominent types of
brand associations are brand personality and organizational association, both of which affect the brand
equity (Pappu et al. 2005).
Brand Self-congruency
Analogously, self-congruency can be understood as the perceptive match of consumers’ self-concept and
the image of a given brand product or service (Sirgy et al. 2008). Consistent with Sirgy’s (2008) self-
congruity theory, consumers’ self-image influences them in choosing certain products and brands. With
this consistency, they can express their self-identity to their surroundings or the public (self-consistency)
and also enhance their self-esteem through a positive impression and reflection of themselves in the eyes
of the public (Elliott 1986).
A brand is more attractive for consumers when it fits their sense of who they are because such a brand
enables consumers to maintain and express their sense of self more fully and authentically, thereby
enhancing their decision to buy a certain brand (Bhattacharya & Sen 2003). The existence of self-
congruence that imposes a psychological comparison involving the product user image or brand image
and the consumer self-concept further determines the consumer behavior (Hosany & Martin 2012).
Perceived Quality
Perceived quality is defined as judgment created by customers in response to comparisons between their
expectations and perceptions of the performance of a service (Grönroos 2001). Perceived quality is a
subjective evaluation consumers make and does not refer to the actual quality of the product (Zeithaml
1988).
An escalating amount of research on perceived quality suggests that perceived quality is a significant
element in influencing consumers’ satisfaction, purchase intention, and brand loyalty (Bei & Chiao 2001;
Kuo et al. 2009). The intent is to examine the role of perceived quality in establishing brand loyalty in
ready-to-wear from the perspective of Generation Y, often called millennials. Perceived quality is also
influenced by consumers’ self-image congruity, which leads to a positive influence on consumers’ brand
loyalty (Das 2015).
Attitudinal brand loyalty is a measure of consumers’ different stated preferences, commitment, and
purchase intentions toward a brand under different conditions (Heere & Dickson 2008). To be more
specific, having sufficient attitudinal brand loyalty suggests that customers recommend and advise the
purchase or use of the focal product to other customers. Brand loyalty is present when a person
continually indicates a similar attitude in various circumstances similar to those the person has previously
encountered.

Vision 2025: Education Excellence and Management of Innovations through Sustainable Economic Competitive Advantage
As mentioned previously, brand loyalty can be understood as a favorable attitude toward, and consistent
purchase of, a particular brand. However, this definition may be too simple to fully explain brand loyalty
from the consumer behavior perspective. Thus, it is also crucial to understand behavioral brand loyalty,
which refers to the repeated purchase behavior of loyal customers (Bandyopadhyay & Martell 2007).
Behavioral brand loyalty is a function of a brand’s relative frequency of purchase in both time-
independent and time-dependent situations. Moreover, brand loyalty is a (1) biased (i.e., non-random), (2)
behavioral response (i.e., purchase), (3) expressed over time, (4) by some decision-making unit, (5) with
respect to one or more brands out of a set of such brands; it is a function of psychological (decision-
making, evaluative) processes. To fully assess brand loyalty, researchers have also recognized that brand
loyalty can be classified into three categories, into which the various operational measures are placed
(attitudinal, behavioral, and composite; both attitudinal and behavioral). Thus, it is also essential to focus
on the behavioral side of brand loyalty as it involves a high level of behavioral responses, repurchases
over time, as well as a decision-making unit.
Based on the above arguments and previous research (Lu & Xu 2015), the following hypotheses and
framework are developed:
H1: Brand self-congruency has a positive influence on Indonesian consumers’ brand association toward
sportswear brands.
H2: Brand self-congruency has a positive influence on Indonesian consumers’ perceived quality of
sportswear brands.
H3: Brand self-congruency has a positive influence on Indonesian consumers’ attitudinal brand loyalty
toward sportswear brands via brand association and perceived quality.
H4: Brand association has a positive influence on Indonesian consumers’ attitudinal brand loyalty
toward sportswear brands.
H5: Perceived quality has a positive influence on Indonesian consumers’ attitudinal brand loyalty toward
sportswear brands.
H6: Attitudinal brand loyalty has a positive influence on Indonesian consumers’ behavioral brand loyalty
toward sportswear brands.
H7: Brand self-congruency has a positive influence on Indonesian consumers’ behavioral brand loyalty
toward sportswear brands.

Research Method
In this study, a conclusive research design is used, which is further processed into a descriptive research
design. Descriptive research is a type of conclusive research that has the main objective of describing a
point, usually about consumers, sales, or market characteristics (Malhotra 2007). This research uses a
single cross-sectional design because information from respondents is collected in only one period.
Descriptive research in this study is carried out by distributing questionnaires to each potential respondent
with the aim of obtaining specific data and information from the respondents in connection with the
related research variables. Furthermore, data processing is carried out using the structural equation
modeling (SEM) method, which is processed with the LISREL program.
This research begins with a test conducted with 10 respondents. A wording test aims to determine
whether the use of words in the questionnaire is understandable so as to avoid the possibility of ambiguity
when respondents read the questionnaire. The next stage, carried out by the researcher, is pre-testing. The
researcher shares the questionnaire with 30 respondents to test the reliability and validity of the
questionnaire submitted (Malhotra 2007). The next stage is to conduct the main test by distributing
questionnaires to respondents.
Primary data in this research are obtained through a field survey using a structured questionnaire. The
questionnaire presented to respondents is generally self-administered. Data are collected via online survey
questionnaires to consumers aged 17 years and older; the surveys are conducted online in Indonesia. The
digital questionnaire is shared through online platforms of social media.
The questionnaire is divided into three sections: screening, main, and consumer profile questions. In the
screening section, the questionnaire filters respondents so that only those who conform to the
requirements can continue with the questionnaire. This is achieved through the use of yes or no questions,
which is an example of a nominal scale measurement. During the main question section, a 6-point Likert
scale, which is an example of an interval scale, is used.
2661
Vision 2025: Education Excellence and Management of Innovations through Sustainable Economic Competitive Advantage
The 6-point Likert scale aims to test items that represent the five variables (see table 1). Finally, the
questionnaire ends with consumer profile questions that aim to describe respondents’ characteristics. This
section asks respondents to identify their gender (nominal scale) and spending pattern (ratio scale).
The relationship between latent variables and observed variables has reflective properties, meaning that
observed variables are reflections of related latent variables (Wijanto 2008). Hence, by assessing the
measurement model, the researcher attempts to determine whether the observed variables truly reflect the
latent variable; this analysis of the measurement model is also called confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).
For this reason, the researcher conducts a test by checking whether the t-value and standardized loading
factors (λ) of each and all observed variables meet the criterion of good validity, namely, the t-value
value 1.645 and the value of standardized loading factors (SLF) ≥ 0.50. Meanwhile, for reliability
analysis, the researcher uses composite reliability (CR) ≥ 0.70 and variance extracted (VE) ≥ 0.50
(Wijanto 2008).
Analysis
With respect to hypothesis 1, by assessing the research results of t-values and SLF values, one can see
that brand self-congruency has a positive effect on consumers' brand association toward a sportswear
brand. Based on figure 2, brand self-congruency presents a t-value of 9.54, which is significant as it is
2662
Vision 2025: Education Excellence and Management of Innovations through Sustainable Economic Competitive Advantage
greater than 1.645 (α=5%, one-tailed) (Malhotra 2010). Hence, this study can conclude that brand self-
congruency has a positive influence on consumers' brand association in the sportswear brand market from
the perspective of Indonesian consumers.
Based on hypothesis 2 and the results shown in figure 2, by assessing the research results of t-values and
SLF values, it is evident that brand self-congruency has a positive effect on consumers' perceived quality
toward a sportswear brand. Based on table 4.30, brand self-congruency presents a t-value of 6.70, which
is significant as it is greater than 1.645 (α=5%, one-tailed) (Malhotra 2019). Hence, this study can reckon
that brand self-congruency has a positive influence on consumers' perceived quality in the sportswear
brand market from the perspective of Indonesian consumers. This result is consistent with Jinzhao Lu and
Xu (2015), whose study supports the argument that brand self-congruency has a positive influence on
consumers’ perceived quality of sportswear brands.
For hypothesis 3, based on the research results of t-values and SLF values, brand self-congruency has a
positive effect on consumers' attitudinal brand loyalty via brand association and perceived quality toward
a sportswear brand. Based on figure 2, brand self-congruency presents a t-value of 2.35, which is
significant as it is greater than 1.645 (α=5%, one-tailed) (Malhotra 2019). Hence, this study can reckon
that brand self-congruency has a positive influence on consumers' attitudinal brand loyalty in the
sportswear brand market from the perspective of Indonesian consumers. This result is consistent with Lu
and Xu’s (2015) study, which also supports the argument that brand self-congruency has a positive
influence on consumers' attitudinal brand loyalty to sportswear brands in the Chinese market. Moreover,
the results also explain the mediation indirect effect that is accommodated by having an SLF value of
0.764, meaning that brand association and perceived quality partially mediate brand self-congruency
toward attitudinal brand loyalty, in which the direct relationship SLF value is 0.25 and the indirect total
mediation value is 0.764.
Based on hypothesis 4 and the results shown in figure 2, by assessing the research results of t-values and
SLF values, one can see that brand association has a positive effect on consumers' attitudinal brand
loyalty toward a sportswear brand. Based on figure 2, brand association presents a t-value of 4.45, which
is significant as it is greater than 1.645 (α=5%, one-tailed). Hence, this study can posit that brand
association has a positive influence on consumers' attitude loyalty in the sportswear brand market from
the perspective of Indonesian consumers. This result is consistent with Jinzhao Lu and Xu (2015), whose
study also supports the argument in the perspective of the Chinese market and Chinese consumers.
In hypothesis 5, by assessing the research results of t-values and SLF values, one can see that perceived
quality has a positive effect on consumers' attitudinal brand loyalty toward sportswear brands. Based on
figure 2, perceived quality presents a t-value of 4.01, which is significant as it is greater than 1.645
(α=5%, one-tailed). Hence, this study can suggest that perceived quality has a positive influence on
consumers' attitudinal brand loyalty in the sportswear brand market from the perspective of Indonesian
consumers. This result is consistent with Lu and Xu (2015), whose study also supports the argument that
brand self-congruency has a positive influence on consumers' attitudinal brand loyalty toward sportswear
brands in the Chinese market.
According to hypothesis 6, attitudinal brand loyalty does not have a positive effect on behavioral brand
loyalty (t-value = -0.65). This means that attitudinal brand loyalty has an insignificant negative effect on
behavioral brand loyalty. On the other hand, Lu and Xu (2015) argue that attitudinal brand loyalty has a
positive effect on consumers' behavioral brand loyalty for sportswear brands.
In hypothesis 7, the researcher predicted that an individual’s brand self-congruency positively affects his
or her behavioral brand loyalty. Based on results of the analysis conducted through LISREL 8.51, the
relationship between brand self-congruency and behavioral brand loyalty for sportswear brands has a t-
2663
Vision 2025: Education Excellence and Management of Innovations through Sustainable Economic Competitive Advantage
value of 2.26, which is greater than 1.645 (α=5%, one-tailed); therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected.
Consequently, the results suggest that brand self-congruency influences the behavioral brand loyalty
toward sportswear brands. This finding is consistent with previous research. Lu and Xu (year) also reveal
that brand self-congruency affects behavioral brand loyalty. The mediation effect of brand association,
perceived quality, and attitudinal brand loyalty scores an SLF value of 0.393, showing a mediation effect
between these variables. However, this score does not show full mediation as the direct SLF value from
brand self-congruency to behavioral brand loyalty is 0.50. Thus, brand association, perceived quality, and
attitudinal brand loyalty act as partial mediation variables for behavioral brand loyalty.
Conclusion
The purpose of this research was to understand the determinants of brand loyalty dimensions by assessing
the brand self-congruency among consumers in Indonesia. In doing so, the researcher implemented the
model established by Lu and Xu (2015). Conducting this research in Indonesia provided different results
and explanations. The difference in the results is thought to be a result of differences in the context of the
country and the cultural background leading to different perceptions than Lu and Xu (2015) found for
China.
The results show that brand self-congruency influences all variables that are included in this research:
brand association, perceived quality, attitudinal brand loyalty, and behavioral brand loyalty. Furthermore,
the data suggest that brand self-congruency heavily influences brand association with a t-value of 9.54.
This implies that when consumers have a match between their self-concept and the image of a given
product/service, they have knowledge in mind regarding any brand that reflects their evaluation of the
overall brand equity.
The second most prominent influence appears in the relationship between brand self-congruency and
perceived quality, which scores a t-value of 6.70. This means that when consumers have a match between
their self-concept and the image of a given product/service, the consumers have an established judgment
2664
Vision 2025: Education Excellence and Management of Innovations through Sustainable Economic Competitive Advantage
created in response to comparisons between expectations and perceptions of the performance of the
service.
Third, the researcher accepts and examines the relationship between brand association and attitudinal
brand loyalty, with a t-value of 4.45. Hence, this hypothesis provides an understanding that when
consumers have knowledge regarding a brand in their mind, which reflects the overall brand equity in
their mind, it results in consumers’ stated preference for, commitment to, and purchase intention toward
the brand.
Perceived quality is also found to influence brand self-congruency. This research reveals this positive
influence with a t-value of 4.01. Therefore, by accepting this proposition, the researcher can conclude that
when consumers have good perceptions regarding a brand’s quality and performance, it leads to
consumers’ satisfaction and attitudinal brand loyalty.
The third hypothesis is also accepted in this research with a t-value of 2.35. This confirms the positive
influence of brand self-congruency on attitudinal brand loyalty. This implies that a brand receives greater
appreciation when it strengthens users’ self-concepts; making the brand congruent with consumers’ own
self-image tends to generate more positive attitudes toward loyalty (Belk 1988). However, two meditating
variables accommodate the flow of this influence: brand association and perceived quality. The total
effect is presented in the SLF value of 0.764 after applying a full mediation approach as it is higher than
the direct SLF value of 0.25. Therefore, this research supports the idea that self-congruency leads to
stronger brand association and identification as it refers to the resemblance in consumers’ self-image and
brands. The study supports previous research reporting that in ready-to-wear products perceived quality is
influenced by consumers’ self-image congruity. This leads to a positive influence on consumers’ brand
loyalty, confirming the relationship between brand self-congruency and perceived quality and brand
loyalty (Erdoğmuş & Büdeyri‐Turan 2012).
Next is the relationship assessment of brand self-congruency and behavioral brand loyalty, which is also
accepted with a t-value of 2.26. This is explained as stronger congruity between the ideal and the actual
self-concept creating a circumstance of excitement, which then leads to achieving consumers' actual or
desired self-image that involves the action and behavior of repurchasing a certain brand. However, this
relationship is not accommodated by full mediation from brand association, perceived quality, or
attitudinal brand loyalty. This can be seen in the total effect from the SLF of 0.393, which is lower than
the direct effect of 0.50 and results in a partial mediation by brand association, perceived quality, and
attitudinal brand loyalty.
Last, the researcher finds no significant influence from attitudinal brand loyalty to behavioral brand
loyalty as it presents a t-value of -0.65. This means that attitudinal brand loyalty, a stated attitude
preference and commitment to being loyal to a certain brand, might not have a positive impact on
consumers’ frequency of purchasing the brand. However, this rejection of the hypothesis reaffirms that
attitudinal brand loyalty and behavioral brand loyalty are two different measures and should be assessed
differently.
Managerial Implications
Managerial implications from the study can help related parties, especially sportswear product producers
and marketers. Brand self-congruency has a positive impact on all the variables. Thus, it is important for
related managers to implement strategies that represent a brand image that is accepted by the largest
segment of current and/or potential customers in the sportswear industry. This can be done by choosing
appropriate brand endorsers, media channels, and price points.
2665
Vision 2025: Education Excellence and Management of Innovations through Sustainable Economic Competitive Advantage
As brand association highly mediates brand self-congruency and attitudinal brand loyalty, firms should
prioritize how consumers associate brands in their minds. Alternatively, brand communication should
also develop brand association rather than focusing exclusively on brand image, which only serves for
brand awareness. This can be done through product design and development to enhance the positive
association in the target consumers’ minds.
Since perceived quality also mediates brand self-congruency to brand loyalty, firms should concentrate
on product quality and performance. This can be done by including brand durability and reliability in
marketing strategies to emphasize the perceived quality for consumers.
The insignificant impact of attitudinal loyalty on behavioral loyalty indicates that when consumers state
their attitude preference for being loyal to a certain brand, it might not have a positive impact on their
frequency of purchasing that brand. Firms should pay attention to other variables such as price and
availability that may affect consumer decision making or purchasing behavior. This insignificant result of
attitudinal brand loyalty to behavioral brand loyalty may be affected by other elements, including
consumers’ financial ability and availability of products. This phenomenon can be understood as
consumers’ inability to convert this attitudinal commitment into actual purchasing behavior.
However, consumers who are not included among behaviorally loyal customers are potentially loyal
customers who will manifest their attitudinal loyalty as purchase behavior as soon as they have the
financial ability to buy the products. Hence, to successfully convert this attitude to real purchasing
behavior, firms should work on their pricing strategies and product development to increase both
availability and affordability for potential customers.
Clearly, these findings show that insignificant behavioral brand loyalty in sports apparel leads to a multi-
brand closet or wardrobe. The results reflect the intense competition in the Indonesian sportswear market
in which consumers can handily switch among brands. Therefore, firms should apply strategies that also
focus on the long-term loyalty relationship to build a competitive advantage in the Indonesian sportswear
market.
