Liquefied Petroleum Gas Material Safety Data Sheet: 1. Product & Company Identification
,
P.O.Box 3568 Ruwi, Postal Code: 112, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman
Hazardous ingredients:
Note: May contain a very small dosage of odouriser for leak warning of the gas.
3. Hazards Identification
HIGHLY FLAMMABLE. KEEP AWAY FROM SOURCES OF IGNITION.
Main Hazards: Vapourised liquefied petroleum gas is highly flammable and can form
explosive mixtures with air. The vapourised liquid does not support life. It can act as simple
asphyxiant by diluting the concentration of oxygen in the air below the levels necessary to
support life. It can act as a simple asphyxiant.
Adverse health Effects: The liquefied petroleum gases are non-toxic. Prolonged inhalation of
high concentrations has an anesthetic effect.
Biological hazards: Contact with the liquid phase of the liquefied petroleum gases with the
skin can result in frostbite.
Vapour inhalation: As the vapourised liquid as act the simple asphyxiant death may result
from errors in judgment, confusion or loss of consciousness which prevents self rescue. At
low oxygen concentrations, unconsciousness and death may occur in seconds without
warning.
Eye Contact: Contact with the liquefied or pressurized gas may cause momentary freezing
followed by swelling and eye damage
Skin Contact: Contact with the liquefied or pressurized gas may cause frostbite (cold
burn). This material is a gas under normal atmospheric conditions. No harmful
effects from skin absorption are expected.
Ingestion (Swallowing): This material is a gas under normal atmospheric conditions and
ingestion is unlikely.
Signs and symptoms: Effects of overexposure may include irritation of the respiratory tract,
irritation of the digestive tact, diarrhea, transient excitation followed by signs of nervous
system depression (e.g. headache, drowsiness, dizziness, loss of coordination, disorientation
and fatigue.)
Light hydrocarbons are simple asphyxiants and can cause anesthetic effects at high
concentrations. Symptoms of overexposure, which are reversible if exposure is stopped, can
include shortness of breath, drowsiness, headaches, confusion, decreased coordination,
visual disturbances and vomiting. Continued exposure can lead to hypoxia (inadequate
Skin Contact:
Treat burned or frostbitten skin by flushing or immersing the affected areas in luke warm
water. After sensation has turned to the frostbitten skin, keep skin warm, dry and clean. If
blistering occurs, apply a sterile dressing.. Seek medical attention immediately
Inhalation breathing): If respiratory symptoms develop, move victim away from source of
exposure and into fresh air. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention. If victim is not
breathing, clear air way and immediately begin artificial respiration. If breathing difficulties
develop, qualified personnel should administer oxygen. Seek medical attention
immediately
Ingestion (Swallowing): This material is a gas under normal atmospheric conditions and
ingestion is unlikely.
Pressure injection: Always obtain immediate medical attention even though the injury may
appear minor.
Extinguishing media:
Do not extinguish fire unless the leakage can be stopped. Do not use water jet. Use Dry
Chemical Powder, Carbon dioxide or foam.
Special Hazards:
The rupturing of cylinders or bulk containers due to excessive exposure to a fire could result
in a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion) , with disastrous effects. As the
flammability limits in air for the main constituents of liquefied petroleum gas vary between
approximately 2 and 11% by volume, extreme care must be taken when handling leaks.
Emergency Actions:
If possible, shut off the source of the spillage. Evacuate area downwind of fire. Post notices
“NO NAKED LIGHTS –NO SMOKING “ . Use water to keep fire-exposed containers cool
and to protect personnel effecting shutoff. If a leak or spill has not ignited, use water spray
to disperse the vapours and to protect personnel attempting to stop leak, prevent runoff
from fire control or dilution from entering streams, sewers or drinking water supply.
.
Special protective equipment:
For fires in enclosed areas, fire fighters must use self-containing breathing apparatus.
Environmental precaution:
Vapourised liquefied petroleum gas is heavier than air and could form pockets of oxygen –
deficient atmosphere in low lying areas.
Environmental Precautions:
The danger of widespread formation of explosive LPG/ Air mixtures should be taken into
account. Accidental ignition could result in a massive explosion.
Small spills:
Do not extinguish the fire unless the leakage can be stopped immediately. Once the fire has
been extinguished and all spills could result in a massive explosion.
Large spills:
Stop the source if if it can be done without risk. Contain the leaking liquid, with sand or
earth or disperse with special water/ fog spray nozzle. Allow to evaporate. Restrict access
to the area until completion of the clean-up procedure. Ventilate the area using forced-
draught if necessary. All electrical equipment must be flameproof.
Notification procedures:
Do not enter confined spaces such as tanks or pits without following proper entry
procedures such as ASTM D-4276 and 29CFR 1910.146. The use of appropriate respiratory
protection is advised when concentrations exceed any established exposure limits,
Before working on or in tanks, which contain or have contained this material, refer to OHSA
regulations, ANSI Z49.1 and other references pertaining to cleaning, welding, or other
contemplated operations.
Empty containers retain residue and may be dangerous. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze,
solder, drill, grind or expose such containers to heat, flame, sparks, or other sources of
ignition. They may explode and cause injury or death. Containers should be disposed of in
an environmentally safe manner and in accordance with governmental regulations.
Before working on or in tanks, which contain or have contained this material, refer to OHSA
regulations, ANZI Z49.1 and other references pertaining to cleaning, repairing, welding, or
other contemplated regulations.
Storage: Keep containers tightly closed. Use and store this material in cool, dry, well-
ventilated areas away from heat, direct sunlight, hot metal surfaces and all sources of
ignition. Post area “No smoking or open flame”. Store only in approved containers. Keep
away from any incomplete material. Protect containers against physical damage. Outdoor or
detached storage is preferred.
Cylinders containing liquefied petroleum gas should only be handles and stored in the
vertical position. Cylinders should never be rolled. Do not allow cylinders to slide or come
into contact with sharp edges and they should be handled carefully. Ensure that cylinders
are stored away from other oxidants. Comply with all local legislation.
Personal protection:
Self-contained breathing apparatus should always be worn when entering area where
oxygen depletion may have occurred .Safety goggles , gloves and shoes, or boots, should be
worn when handling containers.
Skin Protection:
No special requirements under ordinary conditions of use. Thermally protective gloves must
be worn when handling liquid to prevent skin contact and frostbite.
Conditions to Avoid:
Heats, sparks, flame, and build up of static electricity
Materials to avoid (Incompatible Materials): Contact with strong oxidizing agents such as
nitrates, perchlorates, chlorine, fluorine.
Hazardous polymerization:
Will not occur
This product is an asphyxiate. Simple asphyxiates act by displacing oxygen in the lungs
thereby diminishing the supply of oxygen available to the blood and the lungs. Continued
lack of oxygen may result in convulsions, loss of consciousness and death. Since exercise
increases the tissue need for oxygen, symptoms will occur more quickly during exertion in
an oxygen-deficient environment. Oxygen in enclosed spaces should be maintained at 21%
by volume. In addition, exposure to this product may cause as general central nervous
system (CNS) depression typical of anesthetic gases or intoxicants.
o RCRA information
Disposal of unused product may be subject to (Resource Conservation and recovery
Act) RCRA regulations (40CFR 261) due to the characteristics / chemicals listed
below. Disposal of the used product may also be regulated due to ignitability,
corrosively, reactivity or toxicity as determined by the toxicity Characteristic leaching
procedure (TCLP)
