N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Kei Zyrylle Mandanas Date of Activity: 4/9-12/21 Faculty name: Darlene Lacroix
Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be

specific about the purpose and your role):

I attended a Basic Life Support Training through the American Red Cross. The purpose

of this training is to equip healthcare providers with the knowledge to recognize and assess life-

threatening emergencies, and the skills necessary to deliver prompt and safe care. I was guided

on how to approach situations that may necessitate the performance of cardiopulmonary

resuscitation or a back blow to rescue someone in need. My role is to be competent so that I may

apply the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to anyone who requires it to stay alive. I also took an

online course created by Yale University about the Science of Well-Being. The purpose of this

course is to apply the science of psychology to encourage people to improve their habits and

change their behaviors. Since people are not as happy as we used to be and are becoming more

unhappy, the course was designed to provide insights about happiness through scientific

evidence and individual experiences in modifying daily habits. My role is to put what I learn into

practice for myself and society where I apply the knowledge, skills, and insights I am gaining

through my experiences in my career as a nurse and the patients I will care for.

Where was this held and what was the program/activity length?

The BLS training occurred via the Red Cross Learning Center website and in person at

JLM Services for a total of 4 hours. I fulfilled 4 hours of the Happiness course through Coursera.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

The BLS training is valuable to me because I wish I knew the related skills sooner. I had

encountered incidents where having the skills would have been crucial in helping me act and

help others. Now with the skills I have, I can help save the life of a friend, family member, or
any individual I come across who finds themselves in a life-threatening situation. Happiness is a

concept that had always piqued my interest; a topic I want to expand my understanding on and

improve in my own life. The course challenged my notions about happiness and made me see

why I am not as happy as I’d like to be. I had a shift in perspective of what I assign my happiness

to or what I allow to affect my happiness in either direction. I now have several tools I can use to

raise my happiness and improve my quality of life.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

Whenever a life-threatening situation occurs, I will help provide care so that through

experience and continuous practice, I can enhance my critical thinking, ability to work with

others, and implement safe and punctual care. Besides caring for myself to prevent burnout, with

the new perspective I have about happiness, I can communicate therapeutically, understand my

patients’ intuition about their happiness and the emotions they may be experiencing when

adjusting to health changes. I can better deliver holistic care which encompasses emotional well-

being.

Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why or

why not? (Describe)

I recommend the BLS training for everyone because it is an essential life skill that is

applicable in any setting as life-threatening emergencies can arise anywhere and anytime, and

can help prevent premature death when help from others cannot be acquired. Similarly, with the

Happiness course, individuals can find meaning, insights, and a change in their life from

engaging in habits that help increase happiness.
