Republic Act 8293, section 176 states that: No copyright shall subsist in any work of the
Government of the Philippines. However, prior approval of the government agency or office wherein the
work is created shall be necessary for exploitation of such work for profit. Such agency or office may,
among other things, impose as a condition the payment of royalties.
Borrowed materials (i.e., songs, stories, poems, pictures, photos, brand names, trademarks, etc.)
included in this module are owned by their respective copyright holders. Every effort has been exerted to
locate and seek permission to use these materials from their respective copyright owners. The publisher
and authors do not represent nor claim ownership over them.
Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate sheet of
paper.

Modul
e Changes in Properties of
3 Materials
This module focuses on the study of different processes such as mixing, heating
and cooling that can change materials and their properties. After learning more
about these processes, students will develop ideas on how these materials can be
useful as the new properties may be better suited for particular purposes.
The main objective of this unit is to engage students in simple activities to explore a
useful way to start thinking about matter as different materials, or substances,
that it can be made into.
Here are some key questions for you to ponder after finishing this module:
1. What happens to materials when heated or cooled?
2. What happens to solid materials when mixed with other solid materials?
3. What happens to solid materials when mixed with liquid materials ?
4. What happens when two liquid materials are mixed?
What’s In
Let’s recall your understanding of concepts in the state of matter using the
situation depicted in the picture below:
What’s NewIn the succeeding activities, you will do inquiry-based study to help you
define and recognize changes that materials undergo when exposed to certain
conditions. Meanwhile, let’s read the comics strip below to provide us information
about the properties of some materials that surrounds us.
Like other materials, solids have different properties
such as size, shape, color, texture and others. The
atoms in a solid are closely packed together and contain
the least amount of kinetic energy. It could also undergo
changes when exposed to certain condition such as
temperature or when mixed with other materials.

What happens to solid materials when mixed
with other solid materials?
Liquid materials can be mixed with other liquid materials. While some
liquids completely mix with the other liquids, some do not. Two liquids that
do not mix form two layers like what you see with oil and water.
ACTIVITY
What’s More 1. Effects of Temperature to a Material
Directions. Match the given items from column A to column B, then write HEAT if
the process undergoes heating and COOL if it undergoes cooling.

Guide Questions:
1. Which mixture looked the same throughout?
2. Which mixture did not the same throughout?
3. Is there a change in the property of each solid material in the mixture?
Directions: Complete the table below by checking the proper column corresponds to
your answer.

leaves and water
vetsin and vinegar
Guide Questions:
1. What are the solid materials that can be completely dissolved in the liquid
materials?
2. What are the solid materials that cannot be completely dissolved in the
liquid?
3. What happens to the solid materials when mixed with liquid materials?
Yes No

coconut milk and water
Guide Questions:
1. What liquid materials mixed completely?
2. What liquid materials do not mix completely?
3. What happens to the liquid materials when mixed with other liquid
materials?
What I Have
Learned
1. Adding or removing heat causes change in the state of matter. Solid
changes into liquid through melting. Liquid changes to solid through
freezing. It also changed its size, shape and texture.
2. When two or more materials are combined, a mixture is formed.
3. When the solid material is mixed with other solid material and
each of the combined/ mixed materials can be easily identified
from one another. Such mixture is called heterogeneous
mixture. If the resulting mixture cannot be distinguished from
each other and the same throughout, such mixture is called
homogeneous mixture.
4. Some solid materials completely dissolved in the liquid
materials, but others do not. Some settled at the bottom of the
container, while others stayed within the liquid. Some solid
materials spread out evenly in the liquid materials, but some do
not. When mixed with the liquid, some solid materials changed
their size, shape, and color, but some do not.
5. Some liquids completely mix with the other liquids, some do
not. Two liquids that do not mix form two layers like what you
see with oil and water.
What I Can Do
MIXTURES AT HOME!
Directions: Look for substance present in your house which can be mixed. List it on
the table below and complete the needed data.
1. Which of the following describes what happens to the white sugar when
mixed with iodized salt?
A. White sugar will not mix with iodized salt.
B. White sugar settles at the bottom of iodized salt.
C. White sugar can be easily identified with the iodized salt.
D. White sugar cannot be distinguished from the iodized salt.
2. Why does a mixture of cooking oil and water forms two layers?
A. All liquid materials mix completely.
B. No liquid materials will mix together.
C. Some liquid materials will not completely mix.
D. Liquid materials when mixed together increase in temperature.
