This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
What I Need
the Changes in the Material that are Useful or Harmful to one’s Environment. The scope
of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
to Know
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to
follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.
The module focuses on achieving this learning competency:
Identify changes in the materials whether useful or harmful to the
environment. (S4 MT-Ii-j-7.1; S4 MT-Ii-j-7.2; S4 MT-Ii-j-7.3 S4 MT-Ii-j-7.4 S4 MT-Ii-
j-7.5; S4 MT-Ii-j-7.6; S4 MT-Ii-j-7.7)
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Identify changes in the materials that are useful to the environment.
2. Identify changes in the materials that are harmful to the environment.
3. Determine whether the change in the material is harmful or useful in the
environment.
4. Describe beneficial effects of the changes in the materials.
5. Suggest some ways of preventing / minimizing the harmful effects of the changes
in the materials to the environment.

Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate sheet of
paper.
1. Which changes in the material is useful to the environment?
A. making a compost pit
B. using eco bag when shopping
C. using both sides of the paper
D. using pesticides in killing insects
2. What changes in the material is harmful to the environment?
A. throwing detergents in the sewage
B. cutting and shaping lumber into chair
C. cutting of woods to be made into table
D. cutting of fabric to be made into clothes
3. What will happen to the surroundings if air is blanket with smoke from factories and
motorized vehicle?
A. Nothing happens
B. The air will be fresher
C. The air will be cleaned
D. The air will be polluted
4. What changes in the materials can be beneficial to the environment?
A. burning of old tires
B. recycling of plastics

Module Changes in the Materials

4 that are Useful or Harmful
to One’s Environment
All around you are different kinds of materials. Some changes in materials are useful to
the environment, while others are harmful, it may pollute land, water, and air. No matter
what material you choose to recycle keep in mind that you are helping the environment.
You are making the world a better place by keeping usable items out of the trash and
giving them new purposes, and having fun in the process.
Here are some key questions for you to ponder after finishing this module:
1. What are the changes in the materials that are useful to the environment?
2. What made them useful to the environment?
3. What are the changes in the materials that are harmful to the environment?
4. What made them harmful to the environment?

What’s In

As we recall Module 5, a mixture is a collection of different materials. When materials

are combined and can be easily identified from one another, the mixture is known as
heterogeneous mixture. When materials cannot be identified as they are mixed with
another material, the said mixture is known as homogeneous mixture.
Identify each of the material as either HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE or HETEROGENOUS
MIXTURE.

1. salt + water = _______________ 6. salt + pepper = _____________

2. sand + pebbles = _______________ 7. soy sauce + vinegar = _______________

3. oil + water = _______________ 8. paper clips + staple wires = ___________

4. pepper + vinegar = _______________ 9. ginger + alcohol = _______________

10. powdered detergent + rock salt =

5. flour + baby powder = _______________
_______________
What’s New
As changes on material mixed with
another material known as mixture
occurs on different substances, let us now
go further by describing the useful or
harmful effects of these changes in
materials.

What is it?

We are surrounded by materials or things that are constantly changing. These changes
may occur naturally or others are caused by human activities. As these materials
changes they may either be useful or harmful to the environment.

What are the changes in the materials that made them USEFUL to the
  environment?
 Cutting and shaping piece of wood or lumber into chairs, tables, and
cabinets
 Changing wood into charcoal
 Recycling of plastic bottles, tin cans, and rubber tiles, into useful
materials
 Setting up a compost pile for biodegradable material.

What are the changes in the materials that made them HARMFUL to the
environment?
 cutting down trees affect the quality of air that we breathe, soil erosion,
and deforestation mat happened
 Burning of old tires and other plastic materials
 Throwing of decaying matter, waste materials from factories into the
rivers, seas, and oceans it contains chemicals that are harmful to marine
life
 Farmers using too much fertilizer and pesticides too increase their crops,
but it causes the quality of soil to be poor.

To help preserve and conserve the environment and to lessen the harmful
effects of changes in materials, the use of environmental practices such as the
5 R’s of Responsible Waste Management introduced to us. They are Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle, Repair and Rot.

Activity 2 – What am I to you?

Direction: Based on the situations identified in Activity 1 – Picture Match, tell whether
the changes in material is useful or harmful to the environment. Complete the table
below.

CHANGES IN MATERIALS USEFUL / HARMFUL

1.

2.

3.

Activity 3 – Yes or No
Some changes in materials are beneficial to other organisms and to their environment.
Listed below are some changes in materials, draw a if the change is beneficial and
draw a if it’s not.

1. A bus producing black smoke - ___________

2. A tree trunk turned into cabinets - ___________
3. Incineration (burning waste) - ___________
4. Cooking food - ___________
5. Soap making - ___________

Activity 4 – Fill Me Up!

Direction: Fill in the missing letter/s to identify the word being described.

1. R __ C Y __ L __ N G ~ the processing used materials.

2. E __ O __ I __ N ~ movement of rocks materials soil by water or wind.

3. P O __ L __ T I __ N ~ contamination of the purity of the environment.

4. U __ S __ F __ L ~ able to be used for a purpose

5. E N __ I R __ N M __ N T ~ surroundings in which the persons, animals, and

plants live.
Activity 5 – Be Responsible

Let’s apply your understating of the 5R’s of Responsible Waste Management by

classifying the changes in materials listed below as to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair
and Rot.

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE REPAIR ROT

Lessen use of harmful, Replacing all Reprocessing Fixing Waste segregation
wasteful, and non- single-used materials things to and composting
recyclable products materials with into new be used
materials that product again
can be used
multiple
times.

1. Avoid buying disposable or single use products.

2. Have appliances and furniture repaired instead of buying new one.
3. Set up compost pit/bin.
4. Use eco bag, cloth bag or paper bag.
5. Sell used papers to paper mills which can turn them into useable paper.
6. Buy durable food storage and reuse instead of using plastics.
7. Use bottles, tin cans rubber tires for they can be used again.
8. Donate or sell re-usable items

 Changes in the material are sometimes useful or harmful to the environment. What I Ha
A. Useful: cutting of piece of cloth to be made into handkerchief, cutting of fabric toLearne
be made into clothes cutting and shaping pieces of wood/lumber into chair,
changing wood into charcoal for cooking;
B. Harmful: burning of old tires and other plastic materials/trash, throwing of
kerosene and detergents into sewage.
 When the material (soil/land) is dumped with garbage of any kind, such as empty
bottles, plastics, toxic wastes and chemicals from factories, the soil / land becomes
polluted. They become breeding places for pests and diseases causing organisms.
Also, growing plants is not possible in polluted lands.
 Bodies of water becomes polluted when materials are dumped with garbage of any
kind. We are likely to get sick/diseases from contaminated drinking water. Polluted
water also kills aquatic plants and animals.
 The air becomes polluted when the surrounding air is blanketed with smoke from
factories and motorized vehicles, ashes and other gas particles. Burning of garbage
such as plastic materials, rubbers and other wastes is also harmful to the
environment. Polluted air causes skin itchiness, lung infections, cancer and other
respiratory diseases.
 To keep our surroundings clean and to prevent or minimize pollution in our
environment, people are encouraged to do the 5R’s (Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Repair
and Rot)

MULTIPLE CHOICE. Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a
