Sunniva Skaug (2003) enjoyed an intensive and varied musical education.
Next to viola and piano lessons, she attended the Academy of Vocal Arts in
The Hague for 10 years, making tours abroad and singing in high quality
performances on big stages with the “Musicanti” concert choir. Sunniva has
had viola lessons with Julia Dinerstein at the Hellendaal Music Institute in
Rotterdam since 2012. She won the Britten Viola Competition in Zwolle as the
youngest competitor in two successive age categories in 2017 and 2019. In
open contests (for all instruments) she was awarded the 2nd Prize in the
Maassluis Young Talent Competition 2019, a special jury prize at the Peter de
Grote festival in 2018, and 2nd prizes at the regional finals of Prinses Christina
Competition in 2018 and 2020, including a trip to the national semifinals. She
had masterclasses with (among others) Mikhail Kugel, Francien Schatborn,
Alexander Zemtsov and Maxim Rysanov. She has toured internationally as a
soloist with Britten Jeugd Strijkorkest, recording the Badings Viola concerto
with them on CD. At the International Viola Congress (IVC) 2018 in Rotterdam,
she performed as a soloist with the Young Talent Orchestra. Together with her
older sister Ursula, she also performed as a viola duo at the IVC 2019 in
Poznan, Poland. In September 2020, she performed Britten’s “Lachrymae” as
a soloist with Domestica Rotterdam. Sunniva is principal viola of the
Rotterdam-based Young Talent Orchestra, and principal in the Viotta Youth
Symphony Orchestra in The Hague. From 2017-2019 she was a member of
the Young Strings Zeist string quartet, receiving year-round coaching from the
renowned Jeruzalem String Quartet, while acting as young ambassadors for
the Zeist Music Days. In September 2020 she joined the string quartet program
of the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Sunniva plays a viola built by the
Amsterdam-based luthier Daniël Royé in 2016.

This professional recording is from a live concert in the St. Laurens Cathedral
in Rotterdam on September 5th, 2020 (when Sunniva had already turned 17).
The ensemble Domestica Rotterdam consists of musicians from the Rotterdam
Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Wim Steinmann. This work lasts slightly
more than 15 minutes, and includes a series of variations on the Dowland song
"If my complaints could passions move". It is considered that these variations
in themselves respond to the competition rules' demand for different moods,
techniques and styles. Therefore, no Second composition has been submitted.
