Question:

What was the reaction of the Congress and Muslim League towards the partition of Bengal? In
your opinion whether the resentment shown by Hindus towards partition was justified or not.

Answer:
Reaction of Muslim League:
In 1905, the provinces of Bengal and Assam were reconstituted to form two provinces of
manageable size. This partition results in the creation of majority of Muslims in a province that
allows then to enhance their living standards and their education system. Muslims were happy upon
this partition, and they called a huge meeting in Dacca on Oct 22, 1905 to appreciate the efforts for
the partition of Bengal. They thanked ALLAH in another huge meeting. This movement also bring
unity to the Muslims as they were very happy they thought that there would be more success in
unity and eventually it contributed towards the birth of All India Muslim League in 1906.

Reaction of Congress:
As Muslims were in majority in Bengal, Hindus showed opposition to this partition. Because
they were jealous as they know separate province will help Muslims to raise their education,
economic and political standards and it will be fruitful for the Muslims. They strongly rejected
this partition and staged protests and meetings against event. Boycott of British products and
“Swadeshi” Movement was started as the partition hurt their political as well as economic
interest. They named this partition a partition based on religion and strangle nationalism in
Bengal.

MY POV:
The opposition shown by Hindus was not justified because Congress worked for the betterment
of Hindus not for Muslims. Congress is the party of Hindus. They talked about benefits of
Hindus not for Muslims. Partition of Bengal was very benefitted for Muslims. As partition was
based on the administrative reasons because it was difficult for the British Government to control
such a large province. But congress gave it color of religion and strangle nationalism in Bengal
and started protest and boycott to British products. As Muslims were in majority there so it was
their right to have a separate province to make their lives more advanced. Partition of Bengal
was purely based on the geographical and administration realities. In fact, it was done not to give
favor or harm to any community. So in my opinion, the resentments shown by Hindus toward
partition were not justified.
