MODULE #3
Mindanao has a tradition of very rich vocal and instrumental music. Several
traditions of various tribes are still retained in various roles. One of them, like chants
and lullabies, is vocal music. The Miminsad, a dance song, is one of the chant
presentations in Mindanao. With the accompaniment of native musical
instruments, the performers walk before the altar.

One of the dominant instruments used in instrumental music is the gong. It

represents the spiritual and natural life of a Muslim Filipino. As part of their
everyday experience, it is characterized by rituals and practices. The music that
accompanies them makes them fervent and vibrant.

Lesson 1: Palabunibunyan Ensemble

Maguindanaon's most widely performed instruments are those composed

of an ensemble of loud instruments called palabunibunyan. Gongs with a boss in
the center are the majority of these instruments.
All the instruments of the ensemble, with exception of the agung that
is played exclusively by men, are played by either men or women. The
palabunibunyan is for merrymaking and is therefore not played during the
occurrences of death, calamities and for fasting month of Ramadan.

by a single player who can create
improvisations.

wooden drum covered with animal skin. It played using
