Lesson Title:
Objective: 3-5-ETS1 Engineering Design:
- Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes
specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
- Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on
how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
- Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure
points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can
be improved.
- At the end of the lesson students will be able to successfully build a house
out of toothpicks and marshmallows using problem solving. They will
demonstrate engineering techniques.

● This lesson plan should be filled out completely and with great detail. It
should be turned in BEFORE you teach the lesson.
● Make sure that your independent practice is connected to your objective.
● You should try to use technology somewhere in your lesson. I would highly
recommend to use it in “the hook” on in the “input”
● Try to use a strategy for the check for understanding.
● Use citations if needed!
● Read through the lesson plan rubric so you know exactly what my
expectations are.
This lesson plan is worth 35 points.

Marshmallow Toothpick dream house

Materials - marshmallows and toothpicks

Objective - design your dream house that is going to be built out of your materials, write down
what went wrong and what went well during the experiment, come up with a different plan to
perform tomorrow

How are you going to build your house? (plan 1)

What went well? What went wrong?

What do you need to change to improve?

Dream house scenario

It’s 10 years from now and you are beginning to design your dream house. You will be
deciding the size of your house, shape of your house and so much more. You are wanting to host
the christmas party at your new dream home. You will need to have your house designed and
built in 10 weeks (10 minutes real life) just in time for the christmas party!

Price of Each Toothpicks - $1.00 Marshmallows - $2.00

How much did you spend?
