PROCEDURE FOR CALIBRATION OF FIXED ROOF CYLINDRICAL STORAGE TANKS –
NISL-QC-50

1.0 PURPOSE

This procedure describe the method followed to capture the essentials of all statutory
requirements for recalibration of vertical cylindrical storage tanks by metering and
strapping methods into a handy – easy reference manual.

1.1 OBJECTIVE

The importance of this exercise (calibration) is to reaffirm the operation control

measure/standard of vessels/tanks or ascertain capacity difference and gauge
discrepancy owing to previous incorrect measurement or effect of expansion on tanks
that have been in use for a reasonable period of time. As a correcting measure,
certified and accurately performing equipment and tools, matching with adequate
measurement procedures are much needed for accuracy to be obtained.

2.0 APPLICABLE STANDARDS AND CODES

1. DPR Procedure guide (primary) on calibration of storage vessels.

2. Petroleum decree No. 51 of 1969.

3. API standard 2550 and 2551, IP standard 202/72 Method No. 1 for
circumferential measurement

4. API standard 2555 for bottom survey (tank base metering)

3.0 SCOPE OF WORK

a. Before the exercise proper, there shall be validation of all precision equipment
and tools (part 111c of the DPR procedures guide).

b. Strapping/circumferential measurements.

c. Measurement of dead wood, Appurtenance and Bootstraps

d. Measurement of nominal and dipping reference height.

e. Bottom survey by linear through a certified meter. This measures the volume
beneath the dip plate, volume displacement by the capacity level dead wood,
including the sump pit.

f. Measurement of tilt out of verticality.

g. metering

h. compilation and computation of gauge table.

4.0 EQUIPMENT/TOOLS TO BE CERTIFIED

I. Reference tape

II. Master meter

III. Reference thermometer

IV. Dipping tape

V. Caliper(s)

VI. Standard steel measuring tape

VII. Flash light(s)

NOTE: it is expected that there be enough ventilation and adequate lighting in the tanks
after safe-entry test, normally done for the safety of the servicing personnel.

4.1 EQUIPMENT/TOOLS FOR THE EXERCISE

I. Master meter (3”)

II. Strapping tape (standard steel measuring tape)

III. Reference tape

IV. Dipping tape

V. Caliper(s)

VI. Pressure gauge (Disc. 4psi)

VII. Thermometer (Disc. 2degree)

VIII. Calibration stick

IX. Flash light

X. Magnets, clips Etc.

4.2 Things the host company shall provide for the calibration exercise:

a. Previous tanks table (if available).

b. Tank manufactures design drawing.

c. Details on rehabilitation (if any)

d. Tanks labeling (products to be stored)

e. Good source of fresh water

f. Fire fighting equipment (fire extinguishers)

5.0 COMPUTATION AND COMPILATION

All measurement obtained with some correction factors will be used in computing a
gauge table and shall be considered in millimeters and barrel. The volume incremental
heights shall be computed in intervals of 10mm and sub incremental interval by 1mm

above the datum plate. Four copies (in pairs) of computed/compiled tanks tables will
be produced after all set and done.

5.1 The compiled table shall comprise the following information:-

g. Dipping reference height.

h. Calibration method standard.

i. Date of previous calibration

j. Tank location.

k. Condition of fill.

l. Product stored.

m. Calibration company

n. Tilt out of verticality.

o. No. of buttstrapps and dimension.

p. Nominal height.

q. Ambient degrees.

r. Date of last calibration exercise

The above information on an adequately/properly calibrated vessel bears the expected

accuracy in volume gauging at different capacity levels.
