IV Answer the questions.

1 Why are Ethic, Hedge and Octavia willing to get to the tower?
2 How much time do they have to get there?

3 In what way is Ethic supposed to get to the tower?

4 What is the catch connected with the bridge?

5 What is bound to happen when a palindrome isn’t possible?

6 What is a naive solution?

7 What problem does a naive solution pose in this particular situation?

8 What approach is much faster than a naive solution?

V Replace the bold-typed expressions with the words from the text.

Ethic, her robot companion Hedge, and Octavia stand on the edge of a 1. immeasurable gorge. It’s
the only thing between them and the tower that houses the second of three powerful 2. objects.
They’ve got a brief window of time to get across before the guards return. With Hedge’s 3. oil
indicator on empty he won’t be able to fly Ethic across, so the only option is to make a bridge.
Fortunately, the 4. flying piles of stones nearby are the bridge components – invented by Octavia
herself, called 5. hanging cubes . Activate a pile with a 6. explosion of power, and they’ll 7.
aggregate to 8. bridge the ravine as Ethic walks across. But there is, of course, a catch. The hover-
blocks are only 9. static when they’re perfectly seen 10. the same backward or forward . Meaning
that they have to form a 11. sequel that’s the same when viewed forwards and backwards. The
stacks start in 12. arbitrary disposals, but will always put themselves into a palindromic configuration
if they can. If they get to a point where a palindrome isn’t possible, the bridge will collapse and
whoever’s on it will fall into the ravine.

VI Watch the film and match the following sentence halves:

1___ The Node of Power enables a. of the factorial of the number of blocks there
are.
2___ Naive solutions are helpful ways to b. onto the ends and still get a palindrome, so 3
analyse problems, and is OK.

3___ That’s because the total time is a c. through and count how many times odd
function numbers appear.
4___ The first and last blocks can’t d. it takes linear time.

5___ We could tack the new E’s e. Hedge to energize a single stack of blocks.
6___ A loop could then go f. be the same if there are no repeats.
7___ Instead the factorial time, g. work as stepping stones to better solutions.

VII Dictation. Write the text you can hear and give it to your partner for peer-correction. Check the
text with your teacher.

VIII Speaking.

to the company. Thing about strong sides of your game. Be prepared to present its weak sides in a
