That Sugar Film (2014), directed by Damon Garnenu

(Reflection Paper)

That Sugar film is an Australian documentary film made in the year of 2014 directed and

starred by a famous writer and producer Damon Gameou (IMDb). The film was produced by

putting himself to a sixty-day intake of low-fat, but high sugar diet which was usually recognized

by almost all of us as healthy foods even though as compared to fat, sugar contributes more to

obesity, heart disease, and other organ failures. These food are also known as the common food

to be found in a local supermarket. From this, what I can say about the film is what bittersweet

truth this is due to the fact that we somehow can’t prevent from consuming food without the

slightest touch of sugar to it, hereby limiting ourselves but lowers the risk of premature death.

So, the sugar film highlighted the character’s journey in discovering the facts that we all don’t

know or information we used to ignore about sugar. While Damon Gameau waits for the birth of

their child, he left her wife and starts an experimental journey for himself in coming out and try a

high-sugar diet wherein he came initially a healthy diet. He did this for sixty days, taking up high

sugar diet and he consulted with ten nutritionists and doctors so that he would be able to monitor

the effects and changes of his high-sugar diet to his already healthy body. Through his journey in

the film, it highlighted how sugar is the main factor in obesity, heart disease, kidney failure, and

other sickness and ailments. It also given attention how certain companies hid their food

products in supermarket to make it appear like it is delicious and good for a person to be healthy.

Lastly, it depicted certain companies’ immoral way on letting sugar be consumed by people by

paying and manipulating scientists and companies who conduct studies on what causes such

ailments.
